Hi
i have a question about esxi patch
i have installed esxi 5.5 now if i install last patch for esxi 5.5 will it contail esxi 5.5 - update2 or not ?
best regards
babak
Yes It will there in the ESXi 5.5 Update 2 with the latest patch .
you can run the command vmware -vl to check which update you are in.
you can also download the upgrade iso for update 2 and install it from the command line or from VUM
thanks.
but just i want to know i installed ESXI 5.5 and now if just install last patch for 5.5 is that enough?
or i have to install all patches and updates?
VMware vSphere 5: Private Cloud Computing, Server and Data Center Virtualization
you can download the offline update bundle and install update 2.
update 2 should have maximum updates installed/integrated in itself.
Once you have installed update 2 then you can check for updates
thanks
but my main question is :
i have installed ESXI 5.5 now i have installed last patch for esxi 5.5 (ESXi550-201504001.zip) is this enough? or i have to install all patches and update ?
best regards
Babak
ssh to your host and run the command vmware -lv and paste the output here ....
you can check for the updates from VMware Update Manager
You need only look at the build number in this list and you will know the Esxi Update.
VMware KB: Correlating VMware products build numbers to update levels
this is my output :
~ # vmware -vl
VMware ESXi 5.5.0 build-1331820
VMware ESXi 5.5.0 GA
now if i install last vmware patch (ESXi550-201505002.zip) with this build number (2718055) is that enough? this is contain all previous esxi patch or not ?
Yes after install the major verion like esxi5/6 you just need to patch the hoss to come to latest version in that series.
Yes it will contain all the previews patches in the ESXi5.5 Series.
but sometimes for example one patch size is 600m but after this next patch release and is 360m size secondpatch(360m size) contain first patch(600m) is that possible?
Hi, just my two cents, result of experience. This is how I manage to install update on ESXi:
If it's a new host then install last available customized ESXi image from vendor (HP, IBM, ...) if available.
If I just need to update an ESXi host (suppose the installed version is ESXi 5.5, build 1474528 - december 2013):
- search for the most recent update available (update-from-esxi5.5-5.5_update02, build 2068190 - september 2014) and install
- install the last availlable patch (ESXi550-201505002, build 2718055 - may 2015)
As you can see this last patch is a "big one" meaning it's cumulative and contains all the previous released VIBs.
If you consider the previous patch available (ESXi550-201504001, build 2638301, april 2015) you'll see it's a "little one" meaning it does not contain all the VIBs (VIBs Included = VMware:esx-base:5.5.0-2.58.2638301). So for example it doesn't contain tools light and cannot be considered a cumulative patch.
This is why I always install a "update-from-esxi5.5-5.5_updateXXX" (cumulative for sure) in the first step and then I analyze the following patch to choose what to install.
Try to imagine that the latest patch (ESXi550-201505002) actually doesn't exist, I would have installed:
1) update-from-esxi5.5-5.5_update02
2) ESXi550-201501001 (most recent big update)
3) ESXi550-201504001 (most recent little update)
i understand these is this correct ?
1- if i installed esxi 5.5 u2 tha is enough just apply last patch
2- if i install esxi 5.5 first must install update 2 then just install last patch ?
is this correct ?
1- if i installed esxi 5.5 u2 tha is enough just apply last patch = correct
2- if i install esxi 5.5 first must install update 2 then just install last patch = It would probably be sufficient to install only the last patch. But as stated before I generally prefer to install as first step the U2.
It's not rocket science but it works!
