I'm getting an error when deploying a VM from a template (XP Volume License edition w/SP3) saying "Cannot complete customization."
I've got the XP sysprep files in C:\ProgramData\VMWare\VMWare VirtualCenter\sysprep\xp. I am able to enter customization settings in the vSphere Client wizard. The template will deploy to a new VM without customizations. The VM fails with the error if I go through the customization wizard.
What causes this error?
Thanks,
Curtis
Did you recently upgrade vCenter? Reinstall?
I've seen this before when the "Customization Specifications" are "upgraded" and the Administrator (and/or) a Domain Account password isn't reentered into the Customization Specifications.
Have you reset the password in the Customization Specification? Or possibly created a new Customization Specification?

I am using a new installation of vCenter 4 installed in September 2009. I haven't applied any updates yet.
The VMs are standalone machines and are not part of a domain. I've customized using a new password and also tried with a blank password. It was my understanding that the Administrator password I was supplying during the customization was for setting the password and did not need to match and existing password. Is that correct?
I've created, saved, and tried many customizations.
Thanks,
Curtis
I think the problem with not being to complete customizations was caused becuase the template did not have VMWare tools installed. I had quickly created the VM as a template and thought I had installed VMWare tools but they were not. Once I discovered that they were not, I installed them and I no longer have the "Cannot complete customization" error.
I also had this issue with out of date vmtools. Once vmtools were upgraded I could deploy using my existing customisation templates.
Also... You cannot use BLANK passwords!

Worked on this for 3 days before finding this post. Thank you so much. I can stop with the head/wall bashing.
