dlhotka Mar 31, 2015 12:18 PM (in response to vikrantvm)What's running inside the VM Guest, and how much memory do you have allocated to it?

2. Re: High Memory Usage - VMWare Fusion - Yosemite
vikrantvm Mar 31, 2015 5:39 PM (in response to dlhotka)As I mentioned, nothing much really. The time I took this screenshot, there was a terminal window open in linux(my guest OS) doing nothing and I was working on another application on my host - which is what surprised me. I then constantly monitored my memory usage in my next session and saw it literally sky rocket in front of my eyes after about 10 minutes. From some earlier forum replies about memory leak, I also tried disabling hardware buffering, turn off sharing etc. I am running Linux in retina resolution. I have allocated 2 GB RAM and 1 processor core to the VM.

amzhang Apr 8, 2015 8:12 PM (in response to vikrantvm)Hi, welcome to the Community!
Could you please upload more information, like the support information (You can find it From Fusion menu->Help->Collect Support Information) so that we can help to look at the problem. Thanks.
Best Regards,

vikrantvm Apr 9, 2015 11:16 PM (in response to amzhang)HI,
Thanks for your reply. I have attached the log file. I hope it has information since the time I started using the VM.

punkmonk Apr 17, 2015 9:31 AM (in response to vikrantvm)I can confirm that I am having the same issue.
I am running linux inside vmware fusion on OSX-Yosemite. I know the problem is in vmware because inside linux I can see that there is barely any memory usage. However looking at the vmware process on OSX, it sometimes goes upto 30 gigs, before my comptuer crashes.

7. Re: High Memory Usage - VMWare Fusion - Yosemite
LoganRosen May 9, 2015 12:56 PM (in response to vikrantvm)I, too, am experiencing very high memory usage while using an Ubuntu VM in VMware Fusion 7.1.1. It starts off fine, but, as time goes on (especially if I do something semi-intensive in the VM), the vmware-vmx process can use up to 21 GB (!!) of RAM. Then, OS X complains that all of the memory is being used and starts pausing applications left and right. Furthermore, even when the intensive task is over in the VM, it continues to use more memory than I have physical memory (I have 16 GB). Screenshots:
I tried to take logs just before when it was using over 21 GB of RAM, but it locked up. I'll try to get logs again when it's using a lot of memory (not necessarily that much, so it doesn't lock up), and I'll post them here.

8. Re: High Memory Usage - VMWare Fusion - Yosemite
pnht Aug 18, 2015 2:00 PM (in response to amzhang)amzhang,
I am having the same problem. I'm on Fusion 7.1.2, on Yosemite 10.10.5, Macbook Pro 13 mid 2014 w/16 GB.
(reaI run nothing (really, nothing) except VMware Fusion with 1 guest (a Fedora 21 with 8 GB RAM assigned to it). Now that I've been having the problem, I run Activity monitor.
I see that it (vmware-vmx) will be using 2 to5 GB for a long time, then it starts soaring and if I let it, it'll got from 5 to 20 GB (I only have 16, but it says 20 to 22 when it locks up the OS) in a minute or so. I have found that, if I catch it before it hits 15 GB, I can quit (command Q) VMware, which suspends the VM, and then restart VMware and pick up where I left off. Memory usage will be back down to 2 GB or so!!
I've attached a support information zip. This is killing me. Any help would be appreciated..

9. Re: High Memory Usage - VMWare Fusion - Yosemite
pnht Aug 18, 2015 2:04 PM (in response to vikrantvm)I'm seeing this multiple times per day now.
I think it started in the last 3 weeks.
I've been using this MBP as a vmware platform for my Fedora for 5 months or so? (I do 100% of my work in Fedora, the only thing I ever do on OS X is gotomeeting...)

10. Re: High Memory Usage - VMWare Fusion - Yosemite
pnht Aug 18, 2015 3:58 PM (in response to pnht)I took a series of screen shots ifg anyone wants to see how fast the memory goes out of control.
You can look at them individually or download the tar file.
Index of /vmware-fusion-screenshots
Attaching another Support data zip.
Also, I thought maybe it was the switch to the linux 4 kernel somehow triggering the behavior, but no. I switched back to a 3.17.4 kernel and it failed again, almost immediately.

11. Re: High Memory Usage - VMWare Fusion - Yosemite
pnht Aug 18, 2015 6:08 PM (in response to pnht)It is too early to be sure, but I downgraded to 7.1.1 and can not reproduce the failure any longer. I'll post here sometime tomorrow as to whether or not I can cause failures under 7.1.1.

12. Re: High Memory Usage - VMWare Fusion - Yosemite
pnht Aug 19, 2015 1:43 PM (in response to pnht)VMware - there is a serious memory leak in 7.1.2. Huge, fast, viscious.
I'll upgrade back to 7.1.2 if someone wants me to test something. Otherwise I will be staying on 7.1.1 until 7.1.3 or 8.x comes out.
I've spent a full day on 7.1.1, and I cannot get memory usage of vmware-vmx to show above 4 GB (even when the VM Guest is using 7 or 8 GB).
eve that what I'm seeing is unrelated to the OP's problem, because I think mine is a problem with 7.1.2 only. I crashed hard 3 times yesterday, and had to suspend and restart the guest about 6 times. So 9 times it would have crashed yesterday on 7.1.2. I've made no other changes but downgrading to 7.1.1 and I have had 0 crashes today.Wayne

13. Re: High Memory Usage - VMWare Fusion - Yosemite
pnht Aug 21, 2015 8:54 AM (in response to pnht)Final entry here. Just for anyone else who is having the problem. Since I downgraded to 7.1.1, I've had no problem, never see the vmware-vmx process over about 3 GB (even when the guest is clearly using 8 GB).
7.1.2 is the latest; so, there is nothing to upgrade to to see if it is fixed.

14. Re: High Memory Usage - VMWare Fusion - Yosemite
pnht Jan 4, 2016 2:50 PM (in response to pnht)I upgraded to 8, and it happened much less often. Then I got a 4K monitor. BOOM!
For weeks it was crashing at least once a day.
Two days ago, I Disabled 3D Acceleration, so far no more extra memory usage at all!!
