I have a Dell Poweredge 1950, and when I try to install VMware, it does not detect the hard drives. It will detect the flash drives that I have, but neither of my Dell SAS 72gb hard drives get detected.
Sounds like Controller issue. Are the flash on a different one ?
DId you install with the dell ISO ?

Yes I do believe they are on separate controllers. I just tried the Dell iso of VMware ESXi 5.5 and it did not work.
