VMWare ESXi License

Hi All,

Once we assign a license to ESXi host , can the same license be used for another physical server(not in vmware cluster)?

Welcome to the Community,

it depends on the license. I'm not aware of a usage limitation for the free Hypervisor license. For paid licenses, you usually (there are other licensing models too) have a certain number of CPUs/Sockets which are licensed, and it's your responsibility to ensure that you don't assign more CPU licenses then purchased.

Hi Kcspkd10,

As stated by André depending on your license yes you can assign the same license to a different host not in the same vCenter Management Domain and it "should" work.

However if you are paying customer of VMware you will need to ensure that adhere to VMware's licensing guidelines, So if you have a ESXi host license for 2 sockets and you apply it to a 2 CPU (Socket) system it will work. If you apply it to another system not in the same vCenter Management Domain it will also work however you have violated the license agreement.

VMware can audit its customers to ensure that license compliance is met, the same way Microsoft can as well.

If you need this for testing purposes you can obtain an evaluation license from VMware. You can also subscribe to the VMUG Advantage which will give you 365 Eval Keys, you will have to check the local prices for this however it would be a easy sell for a business to pay your costs or you can even purchase it yourself its $200 USD, and this link contains a justification document for you business.

Don't violate license agreements, I have been involved as a consultant with a company which had violated its license agreement and was audited and was caught and it was not pretty or a nice situation for them to go through.

Have fun
