DR plan for offsite

Currently I’m tasked with setting up DR to another site.

Our production environment consists of 2 EXSi Host clustered with iSCSI shared storage, around 15VMs (about 4-6VMs are considered critical) and 1 vCenter Server. We are using the Essentials Plus license.

If I add another ESXi host (hardware would be similar and will be using local storage) to our DR site, add this host to our production vCenter Server and use vSphere replication for the critical VMs to the offsite ESXi Host, will we be able to run the critical VMs from  the DR site in case our production site is unavailable?

Thank You

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

You need vCenter and the VR appliance up and running in order to consolidate the replica disks into VMs and register those VMs in the ESXi servers and vCenter inventory.

If vCenter managing the target ESXi and/or VR appliance is down, you could attempt to manually assemble VM from the copy of the .vmx file and the replica disks, but it will be unsupported and can not guarantee data consistency.

Regards,

Martin
