P2V failed at 98% Stop Code 0x0000007B (inaccessible boot device)

A p2v conversion of a Dell 1950 Server running Windows 2003 Server failed at 98%. After a reboot physical machine hangs at the Windows Starting screen and Virtual Fails to start up due to inaccessible boot device error. If I mount VMDK of a converted server to any running virtual machine I am able to see and access all data as it was on the physical server. (Two partitions, one drive) My problem is described here, however I can no longer boot the source for another conversion.

Has anyone successfully added VMware SCSI Disk Controller drivers in to a failed machine?

Thanks

Can you confirm that the converted virtual machine is configured with an "LSI SCSI Parallel" controller? If yes, you may run the Converter against the VM using the "Configure Machine" option to see whether this solves the issue. In case this doesn't work, you may try to convert the VM (V2V) and make sure you select the mentioned disk controller in the wizard.

converted machine had logical errors on the hard drive.

I was able to correct the errors, but since the corruption was in C:\windows\system32 the machine no longer boots.

Hi there,

can you try booting up from the installation media and repairing your OS? Perhaps it should fix the corrupt files - if you get to recovery console, try running sfc /scannow, or try using this post: Repair Windows 2003 when it fails to boot | Puryear IT | Computer Network Mobile Cloud | innovative ...

yes, I have tried booting from installation media to repair, but the installer does not present me with an option to repair. I am only given a choice to format the drive an install new or install in another directory because \windows is already present on the drive

I think this is beyond the repair.

The only thing that comes to my mind now that could redeem the machine as a last resort is to use a Windows Server 2008 (or later) image and upgrade the broken system to the newer version.
