Workstation crashes when copying files from guest A to guest B

When I copy a file from guest A to guest B in the VMware Workstation 10.0.2 console, the workstation user interface crashes. My VM's continue to run in the background without a problem (nothing in their eventlogs and the VMware tools continue to run).

Host OS: Windows 8.1 Update

Guest OS: Windows Server 2012 R2 Update

What I've tried:

* Downgraded to 10.0.1

* Downgraded host OS to Windows 8.1 RTM

* Downgraded guest OS to Windows Server 2012 R2 RTM

* Downgraded host OS to Windows 8.1 RTM with OOB drivers

After each try I wiped my machine, reinstalled VMware Workstation and created the VM's from scratch. In VMware Player I experience the same issue.

Attached you'll find the necessary logs and the output of my favorite Windows Debugger tool. It clearly states that the problematic thread is busy copying information between guests within vmwarewui.dll

vmwarewui!wui::dnd::CopyPaste::GetLocalFileContents+110

vmwarewui!wui::dnd::CopyPaste::UpdateRemoteClipboard+cc

In the hostd log you also see a reference to the failed copy:

[01652 warning 'Proxy Req 00020'] Error reading from client while waiting for header: class Vmacore::SystemException(An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host)

I'm having this same issue. It's annoying.

I have VMware Workstation 10.0.2 and Windows 8.1 x64 (update 1)

I have had exactly the same issue, now in November 2014.

After a few crashes doing exactly the same thing, it finally corrupted my vmware images and broke 2 of my VMs.

Not happy. Please fix.

I have this issue too. It's driving me nuts! I'm running Windows 8.1 x64 with VMware Workstation 10.0.4. Crashing happens almost all the time when copying files and switching between VM's.

I couldn't  fix the issue and I switched to Windows 8.1 client Hyper-V. It doesn't have all the features that VMware Workstation has, but it's stable and never crashes.

VMware, please fix your sh**y app!

I just installed VMware Workstation 11 (RTM) to see if my issue has been fixed - it has not. As soon as copy a file between 2 guests the product crashes. Very dissapointing.

This is very frustrating bug and I cannot understand why VMware doesn't fix it.

Clearly not everyone experiences this issue. It must be related to our specific hardware/drivers setup I guess.

What kind of hardware/OS setup you are using?

Same issue here in both Workstation 10.0.4 and 11.0

Host:

Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit fully patched, 16 GB RAM, Intel Core i7-3630QM CPU.

I think that the issue is only software related and not hardware related.

To pinpoint the issue, I have tried installing Workstation on two other computers running Windows 8.1 64 bit, but on quite different hardware. Still same issue.

Yep. Exactly the same issue. Windows 8.1, VMWare Workstation 10.0.0.2, Ultrabook with 8 GB. The Workstation crashes the minute I copy a file from Machine A to B. Only work around being, I copy the files to Host then use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V again and it works fine!!

Finally received word from VMware (via Twitter) that they opened an internal error report on this. They will fix it on the next release. Let's hope they keep their promise.

VMware promised to fix the issue in the next release - which appeared today (at least for WS 11). I immediately tested it, and guess what: no more crashes! Now I must say that copy/paste behaviour was still a little unpredictable but at least the program doesn't crash anymore. I'll update the topic when I performed more testing.

I have this issue with Workstation 15 Pro (15.5.7) 😞 Lame.

I have to copy the files to the Host desktop and then to the other VM, 😞
