Vista P2V conversion BSOD 0x7B error

Trying to convert a Vista Home Premium install to a VM using Standalone Converter 5.5.3 to an ESXi server running 5.5.0.  I think I selected Hardware version 8 as I believe I cannot manage a 9/10 version using the free server/client viewer.

2 Issues, one, the converter fails with the "FAILED: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible." error.

The second is that when booting, the VM crashes with a BSOD 0x7B

I can boot into the VM with a Vista recovery disk, it finds the installation (didn't at first)  and have run the repair tool, I have modified the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\P2V\ControlSet001\services\LSI_SAS. and checked the BCD.

I am now at a loss.

Accessing the VM using the vSphere Client 5.5.0.

Any suggestions please?

Could you upload log bundle to see why reconfiguration failed? Once the reconfiguration failed it's expected not to succeed with VM boot...

Is this the right logs?  Just a task to configure machine.  I do not have the original conversion log - sorry.

The problem is your multi boot configuration, it's not supported by Converter, in your case the system volume can not be found.

However once you transfer disk's data to the VM and then reconfiguration fails I could recommend to start VM from Vista CD, enter in recovery console and then invoke 'bootrec.exe /fixmbr' and 'bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd' and then run only reconfigure your VM and then try to boot it.

Hi,

Thanks. I tried that suggestion to no avail.  Decided to convert again but first used easybcd to create a clean bcd.

It still BSODs - this is all I tried.......

New conversion, HW version 8, both recovery partition (0) and C: (1) (but not 😧 and old ubuntu partition) Just Vista in the BCD using easyBCD.  Conversion fails with FAILED: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible.

Boot VM > get bootloader error

Boot VM via vista CD > start repair, recovers error

Boot VM > BSOD

recofigure VM > Fails

Boot VM via CD > repairs issues

Boot VM > picks up recovery partition and boots into that via bootldr.  No repair possible.

Converter > Fails

Boot VM using recovery Partition > bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /rebuildbcd - this does not find an installation of Windows even though I have started the boot process several times!!!

Reconfigure > failed

Boot VM > BSOD

Boot using recovery Partition > check registry entries for LSI_SAS as before - set to 0

Boot VM > BSOD

Bit of a loss really Smiley Sad.  Do not understand why the converter cannot find the system volume, but the VM can boot from it (well start to) Smiley Wink

Last converter logs attached.

Converter uses BCD information to locate the system volume, seems that the problem is BCD content...

So you need to rebuild BCD hive, see information how here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927391 Be careful! I recommend you to do such operations in VM only.

Once you succeed with BCD you need to run reconfiguration with Converter in order to boot VM.
