VMware typically does not make such announcements.

Think Win 10 will work in Fusion tomorrow when it is released?

It probably will to some degree however keep in mind that what's being released tomorrow if far from a finished product! Smiley Wink

Thanks ... I wasn't aware that vmware keeps their lips sealed.

That's okay.  I use all open betas when they're available - on a spare machine. Smiley Happy  I guess I'll hold off on my purchase until I see some comments from other users.

Have just installed the Technical Preview in a Windows 8 x64 machine on Fusion 7.

The VMware Tools wouldn't install from the menu-bar link, so I had to go into the VMware app package, get the Windows.iso and mount it as a CD/DVD drive.

Once VMware Tools was installed I was able to resize the desktop to fit my native resolution. I haven't tried copy/paste or Unity yet.

Looking forward to official support for Windows 10 from VMware.

Adding to that, I have just install Windows 10 TP.

I was able to install VMware Tools without any errors .

Copy paste, Drag and drop , Shared folders, Unity all are working.

However, when I enter unity i see a grey square box on lower left corner. Apart from that , everything looks normal under Fusion.

It looks like the square box is actually the area covered by Windows Start Menu. .

Thanks for the the in-depth testing avanish321.

Re: Tools - when I tried to install them from the menu, the pop-up asking me to install tools didn't appear instantly. However this was on my first boot after setup, and maybe if I'd rebooted I would have been more successful.

Also, thanks for the extra information regarding unity, copy/paste & drag 'n' drop. It's good that you can get pretty much full functionality on an unsupported OS.

I was running the first release of Win10 TP fine, but the update from yesterday (build 9860) seems to have broken shared folders. I have tried repairing VMWare tools, but this doesn't help. Anyone else seeing this problem?

Thanks,

Steve

As the developer for the shared folders feature, I have not had a chance to test the latest Windows 10 builds as yet.

I will do shortly and will fix any issues found.  Those fixes will go out in to tools releases as they occur (but I can't state when those will be even if I knew the dates).

Thanks for the heads-up on this and I will check it out.

For what it's worth I've installed Windows 10 preview on Fusion 5 without problems (Mavericks host).

HI there,

So I have build 9860 32 bit OS installed of Win 10 and I see some issues with our tools service but I can get Shared Folders to work.

So I have a couple of questions or tests for you maybe to try:

In the Task Manager listing all the processes for system and user do you see the vmtoolsd.exe running? There should be 2 instances, one running as the system account and the other as the user account.

If not, you can run services.msc and start the VMware Tools service (it should have a start up type of automatic).

If you get it started and confirmed as running under the Task Manager do you still have issues with Shared Folders at all?

On the shared folders feature, are you starting the Win 10 VM with sharing enabled and shares created?
Or is this immediately after the first tools install in the 9860 Win VM? Then trying to enable sharing and creating shares?

Also what happens if you run a File Explorer window and in the path list box at the center top of the Window manually type in:

\\vmware-host\
and hit return?

Hope this helps?

Steve

Thanks. Steve

Hi again, sorry for not replying sooner... I tried your suggestions and the service was running (both users), so I did what I should have done before which was uninstall / reinstall and now it works. So despite doing a re-install over the top after the upgrade, something had gone screwy - I blame alpha Windows 10 rather than your code though!

I am using the 64-bit version of Windows and OSX Yosemite if that helps track down the problem.

Thanks,

Steve

I can't get Win10TP  64bit to show me that build 9860 is available at all. It indicates no updates other than one for Defender definitions is even available?

Edit: I did a FULL Windows reset and now I see the Build Options pane in Windows Update. I installed 9860, then VMware Tools and Shared Folders is working for me. When I had tried a "refresh" it had failed to work.

@mntnbighker - If I recall correctly, Windows Updates via the Control Panel doesn't show new builds. You have to open the "PC Settings" Modern UI App, then go to "Update and recovery" then "Preview Builds" and "Check Now".

However, it looks like you managed to get it sorted out in the end.

Just a heads-up - you might have to swap to the fast lane in "Update and recovery" -> "Preview builds" before the newest windows 10 build is available to upgrade to.

My installation had me in the slow lane by default. Also, as before, the new update didn't show in windows update for me - you have to go through the Modern UI settings to get it.

"Preview Builds" was missing entirely from the interface until I did the "Reset". I was looking in the right place, but for some reason it was entirely absent.

Hi there,

I just did another upgrade to build 9879 and it broke the Shared Folders here.

I found the root cause though the migration lost a registry setting and once I corrected it the shared folders feature continues to work again.

All you have to do is edit the registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\Order

Name: ProviderOrder

Type: REG_SZ

Data: "RDPNP, LanmanWorkstation,webclient"

Modify to:

Data: "vmhgfs,RDPNP, LanmanWorkstation,webclient"

Exit the registry application

Then you will then have the shared folders drives and UNC paths accessible once more. No need to reboot or log off. No need to uninstall and install tools again.

Hope this helps if you also see this issue.

Steve
