High (~100%) CPU usage OS X 10.10, VMware Fusion 7.0, Win7 Pro with Office 2013

I'm having issue with CPU usage running VMWare Fusion 7 on OS X Yosemite 10.10. On VMware Fusion 7.0 I am running Win7 Pro.

After upgrading to Yosemite all actions take an extremely long time in Windows. Even boot up takes about 15 minutes or longer. From the exact moment that I click 'Start up' for the VM my host CPU usage spikes to 100% and stays there. This is an unusable situation. The maximum use for WIn7 I do is running Office 2013 apps. The issue of high CPU usage intensifies when am using any app from Office 2013 on Win7.

I am running this on 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 Mac with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD.

Tried these things:

  • Reinstalling VMware tools
  • Shutting off unneeded services one at a time
  • Reclaiming Disk space
  • Rebooting the host
  • Changed Cpu allocation to just 1 CPU and RAM allocated to 4GB
  • Went through these forums looking for help.

Is anyone else facing the same issue? Any suggestion to cure appreciated.

Vmware Fusion 6.05 running Windows7 Pro 64

Prior to Yosemite was able to game on this windows VM, after updating to yosemite saw the vmware-vmx go to >200% at times, but maintains above 100% all the time, in activity monitor.

Tried updating to Fusion 7.0 Pro, see the same results in the VM. Have tried lots of settings changes to no avail....

Have searched online without much luck....I expect this is a new issue, since these are both new releases.  However, I think the problem is not directly related to VMware, since I saw the same issue in 6.05 and in 7.

I see the VM CPU usage, with nothing running, just booted to the desktop, peaking out to 100% some what frequently....however, the services tab on task manager, and the resource monitor never seem to update fast enough to see which service is pegging the CPU usage.  I did find some other threads about slow VM's that referenced an issue with dwm.exe, and as I watch the services I do see that one pop up somewhat frequently as high usage, but that would be very anecdotal.

Hopefully this will be a prevalent enough issue that it will get some attention.

Thanks,

M

I'm having the same issue.  the vmware-vmx process name is hovering around 100% all the time.  I only started having this problem when I upgraded to Fusion 7.0.  I've even tried creating a new VM to see if my original one was corrupted but to no avail.

Really hoping someone comes up with a solution really quick for this.

I observed that post i turn on VMware, Spotlight was indexing continuously with the progress bar struck at 0%.

Have tried killing mdworker and md_stores in Terminal and that helped a bit. Now machine is able to run on unity mode without the frame burning in my hand.

However the issue of "VMware-vmx" running at ~100% is still persisting :smileycry: :smileycry: :smileycry:

Any suggestions to fix this ???

Re: Fusion 7 is running VERY SLOW on the GM of Yosemite

I believe this is something Mac host itself as the issue is also experienced under Parallels.

Last post was right.....This solution worked for me.

Fusion 7 is running VERY SLOW on the GM of Yosemite

The post that has the answer is from lordboogle: (Pasted from his post)

Same thing here... registered just to comment on this issue.

I'm experiencing the same issues of poor performance, 1 CPU core usage on and off with VMware Fusion 7 as well as Parallels Desktop 9 exhibits the same behavior.  The issue is random, because sometimes I'll fire up a VM in either app and it will work normally, others it's one CPU being used, and the VM is extremely sluggish - especially if you don't keep the window in the foreground.

This issue seems isolated to the 2011 iMac and Yosemite final.  I had experienced this same behavior in one of the earlier public betas of Yosemite as well, so it certain feels like an Apple-side issue and not one that on VMware.

Edit... Apparantly this issue may be related to the NVRAM preferences of these particular macs, and they say running sudo nvram boot-args="debug=0xd4e" should fix the issue.
