Dear All,
I need to understand if this is possible or not, I've a data store which have few VM's in it, if due to some reason for naming convention I want to rename the datastore, it can be done without any disturbance to VM's ? The confusion here is since VM disk shows the data store in 'edit settings' how this will be changed if the datastore is renamed using vCenter server.
waiting for response.
thanks,
You can rename your datastore without problems and with VMs running on it, since vSphere uses the datastore UUID and not the display name.

Yes Agree with Richardson. you can rename datastore name with NO any issue.
As told, you can always go ahead and rename the datastore even when VMs are running.
As you use the vCenter Server system to manage your hosts, the new name appears on all hosts that have access to the datastore. So no need to worry!!
Please go ahead and do the renaming.
Hello,
thanks for your response. the confusion of renaming was because I've virtual machines running in that data store which I want to rename. So, wanted to clarify if it makes a difference when renaming IF you have virtual machines running in data store.
Thanks,
You can rename with running VMs.
