Network only 100Mbit inside host

The transfer speed between the two virtual machines is only about 11-12MB/s (tested with ntttcp - both directions)

The transfer speed to a windows client outside is 11-12MB/s too, but sending to the virtual machines is about 100MB/s.

ESXi 5.5

Intel DH87RL

Xeon E3-1235

SSD Crucial M500 256GB

Intel Gigabit CT Desktop 82574L

2x VM - Windows Server 2012 R2

status in vSphere Client: 1000Mbit, full duplex

inside the virtual machines the vmxnet3 adapter says 10Gbit

What is the cause? How can I solve this?

Hi Max,

Can you specify the Build version of ESXi.

Verify that interface metric set in NIC in Guest OS.

Try to vMotion the VM to other ESXi host and see the performance.

Try to enable Jumbo Frames in the VM see whether transfer speed increases

Thanks for some input. But it did not solve the problem. I did some more tests.

All updates are installed. ESXi550-201407001/build number: 1892794

I do not have another host, but I exported it to VMware Workstation and everything works fine.

I do not think the problem is caused by the virtual machines, as the Upload/Download posibility in the datastore browser in the vSphere Client is causing the same speed problems.

Upload direct to the host ~1000Mbps / Download from the host only 100Mbps.

The same client I did this test works fine with 1000Mbps with other clients in both directions.

I also did on the host:

Change the adapter to another slot. Change of cable. Change of adapter. LED of the adapter always yellow = 1000Mbps

/var$ esxcfg-nics -l

Name    PCI           Driver      Link Speed     Duplex MAC Address       MTU    Description

vmnic0  0000:02:00.00 e1000e      Up   1000Mbps  Full   65:15:da:15:44:6g 1500   Intel Corporation 82574L Gigabit Network Connection

So I do not think it is a hardware or virtual machine problem but a problem within the ESXi.
