VM Startup Delay Not Working Correctly...

Greetings,

I have 3 VM's setup on my ESXi server. They have all been designated to start automatically with the server...in order. The default startup delay is 120 seconds.

VM 1 - Set to use the default....(Startup delay 120 seconds)

VM 2 - Not to use the default....Startup delay - 600 seconds

VM 3 - Not to use the default....Startup delay - 600 seconds

VM 1 starts 2 minutes after the server starts...which is expected. VM 2, however, starts 2 minutes after VM 1...not 10 minutes after VM 1. VM 3 starts 10 minutes after VM 2.

What is going on here...my understanding is that VM 1 should start 2 minutes after the ESXi server...VM 2 should start 10 minutes after VM 1...and VM 3 should start 10 minutes after VM 2...correct?

you have moved the 3 VM's in question up to Automatic Startup and configured your delay options there? Check out Basic System Administration starting on page 177

It should not matter that the 3 systems are in different resource pools, does it?

We have a similar problem on ESXi 5.1. Was this ever resolved satisfactorily?

OK, very old post but i was a little confused with it too so, in an attempt to clarify things and perhaps help others in the future, i believe your understanding is not correct. When editing a VM's startup settings, the text in the "startup settings" section (of the v. 5.1 Windows vSphere client anyway) clearly states "after starting this virtual machine, continue starting other virtual machines according to the following settings". So, this means that the setting in this box defines the delay of the startup of the next VM and not the one being edited.

Just wanted to say "Thank you" for taking the time to post this explanation so long after the OP.
