OS X 10.10 DP as a VM in Fusion 6.0.3: it works!

Just create an OS X 10.9 VM with the 10.10 DP installer: everything then proceeds exactly as with a Mavericks VM; the Tools install and work, too: but the VM is slooooow, from a graphics point of view.

So, the Yosemite Developer Preview can be run as a VM already now, but of course not yet in an optimal way...

Since you're just starting now, are you using the Yosemite Beta Program installer or what was provided to Developers?

From what I've read, the Beta Program requirements include that you be installing over Mavericks, so that a bootable image isn't necessary. You're apparently starting from scratch, which may be an issue with the Beta Program installer. This whole thread has been devoted to getting the Developer Preview to work as a VM so it looks like the Beta Program installer is different and the suggestions here may not apply. Do you have a Mavericks VM you could start with?

FWIW, there are instructions here for installing the Yosemite Beta in Parallels, and their method requires a VM of Mavericks as the starting point over which Yosemite Beta is then installed. I doubt it'll be much different in Fusion.

hello jhursh102,

just some quick remarks to your problem...

a)  I don't think that it's necessary to apply the installation of OS X 10.10 Beta Installer on top of a Maverick installation.. I install it just into a fresh virtual machine on Vmware Fusion 6.0.3 ...

b)  maybe just doublecheck,  that on the harddrive, where you plan to install your virtual machine, you have sufficient write permissions and enough space...  You'll need a few Gigs extra for temporary installer files...

( about 10 Gigabytes should be free, as a minimum) ... I also checked the 'split virtual disk into 2 GB files' - checkbox in the vm-settings, as various filesystems can easier handle big files like that..

c) also check the vmware logs in the Mac Console app, as it might give you previous hints what exactly went wrong at your installation attempt...

Hope that helps,

Cheers Marcus

Installing direct as a clean VM works just fine on the technical preview.

Regarding the bootable disk image, did you get a real copy of the installer direct from Apple for DP5?  If so, don't open it up, just drag/drop it into the new VM window.  If you did, did you check the CRC/Checksum to make sure it's not corrupt?
