Windows 7 Upgrade Install

I know its probably been answered but I can't seem to find it.

Which version of Windows 7 should I install in my VM.  Or should I elect 8.1.

Anyway, I have a Mac Book Pro with 8GB RAM running Mavericks.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

That's not really a question we can answer for you as it is depended on what you want/need.

Your host should support any of the available versions in Windows 7 or Windows 8.x

If you're unsure, then maybe Windows 8.1 is best as:

- it is the version of Windows that Microsoft actively supports

- current software will target the latest Microsoft version

- it is the version of Windows that is longest supported.

But in all honesty I still like Windows 7 myself better as Windows 8.x Smiley Happy

Hope this helps,

The problem with windows 7 is getting a legal license (Win 7 OEM/System Builder licenses can't be virtualized under the EULA).  If you already have a retail Windows 7 license, use that.  Otherwise, Windows 8 is your only legal option.

I currently have a Lenovo T410 running Win7 Pro. I want to upgrade to a MBPr and use Fusion's Migration assistant to move my Win7 over to the MBPr.

So you're saying this would technically be illegal to do, as I'm running an OEM copy of Win7? Will either Windows/Fusion physically not allow me to do this or is it just a matter of conscience....? Smiley Wink

Thx!

OK, found the answer here:

Migration Assistant: A Guide

If you are running an OEM version of Windows, the migration may fail. Also, VMware cannot support OEM copies of Windows migrated into virtual machines as this is a violation of your licensing agreement with Microsoft
