Getting two beeps when starting a VM -- cause for concern?

Hey everyone.

Background info:

Running Workstation 10.0 and my VM is Windows 2012 with SQL server backend.

Recently (as of in the last week), I noticed that when i turn on this particular VM in my lab, i get two beeps, but the VM boots fine. No idea why it started. If you had to ask me what changed, nothing has. The only thing I can think of is that there is a new update available that I have not done yet and "maybe" it started after that (grasping here.)

I have done some digging around, but have not found anything concrete on what it could be. Did find a few other threads out there that talk about editing the .vmx file and putting a specific line to true:

Re: How to disable system beep on vm startup?

Two questions on that.

1.) Do these new beeps represent a problem with my VM? That is my biggest concern right now as it is the workhorse in my lab. The VM boots fine, works fine it is just those beeps.

2.) I dont have that particular line in my .vmx file, unless I completely missed it.

Any thoughts?

I appreciate it.

Cheers,

TCG

Hi TCG,

Did you recently remove some IDE virtual devices (hard disk or CD/DVD) or switch them from IDE to SATA/SCSI?  There is a known issue with Workstation 10.0.0 and 10.0.1 which causes the VM to emit beeps on boot when there are no devices attached to any of the four virtual IDE ports.  The issue is corrected in Workstation 10.0.2 and newer.

Try updating to the latest version of Workstation and see if the problem is resolved for you, or try adding a virtual IDE CD/DVD drive to the VM – even if it is left "disconnected" – to work around the problem.

Cheers,

Hi

Welcome to communities.

If VM working fine then simple change config file to resolve this problem.

mks.noBeep = "TRUE"
