cpu at 100% every 10 seconds or so

I have MS SQL2008 R2 server on VMware esx5.1.  In the last couple of weeks we've had to restart the server because of poor performance.  There are time outs,etc..  In Windows (2008R2), CPU will show 100%, short spikes every 10 seconds.  Has anyone seen this?  From VMware Vcenter gui, lan/nic looks fine.

Normally SQL Server is disk I/O intensive. How have you configured the storage ? Is it using dedicated LUNs/Datastores for DB and Logs ? Is it using Fast Disks ?

we need to confirm first that the issue with VMware or Windows itself ..check which of windows services is taking much CPU.Also check your VMware tools should be installed properly on VM
