Can't add storage

Hi All,

I'm trying to add 16TB odd of disk space into ESXi 5.5 on a Dell R720.  I can see the size and storage fine but it keeps either prompting me to use "Free space" which give me 224GB or when I select the other option I get an error message.

I've recreated the RAID 5 volume twice but can't get this working.

Any advice?

TIA
MK

Hi Mike,

Could you share the prompt message screenshot and the error message you mentioned?

If I choose "Free Space" it gives me 204.79GB.

If I choose "Use all available partitions" it errors with:

Call "HostStorageSystem.ComputeDiskPartitionInfo" for object "storageSystem" on ESXi "192.168.40.167" failed.

Thanks.

Thanks for your reply.  I'm not sure I understand the answer here.  The only way I can partition them, that I can see, is to use the RAID card BIOS or software?

You need to run the following command for each disk that you’re having issues with (this overwrites the partition table with a standard msdos one which VMware can work with);
NOTE: This will ERASE ALL DATA on the disk in question so be careful to select the right disks!

run thiw command: partedUtil mklabel /dev/disks/<disk id> msdos

To get a list of your disks;

/dev/disks # ls

Thanks Robert - why would I be getting "Access Denied" when running the /dev/disks command?  I am logged in as Root.
