Is there any limit of attaching virtual HDD to a virtual machine

I just would like to know, for attaching number of virtual disks to a virtual machines , are there any limits to it followed by any size limits?

Hey,

take a look at the configuration maximums http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere5/r55/vsphere-55-configuration-maximums.pdf

For vSphere 5.5 the limit is 60 virtual disks per virtual machine.

The max number of virtual disks per VM is 184.

max 4 SCSI-controllers with up o 15 disks = 4 x 15

max 4 SATA-controllers with up to 30 disks = 4 x 30

max 2 IDE-controllers with up to 2 disks = 2 x 2

Woops, that 60 was only the SCSI disks, sorry. So it's the 184 disks Ulli mentioned.

In my case I've one SCSI controller 0 with already 4 Vdisks, I need to add another one, can I add to same SCSI controller the 5th vDisk? I don't want to add second SCSI controller.

please advise.

Yes you can as continuum said earlier 4 SCSI Controller = 4x15 vDisk which means you can add upto 15 vDisk to a controller.

You would get better performance with a second controller  - why dont you want to use a second one ?

Dear Continnum,

I will explain why. Actually before I created one vdisk which is disk 3 on controller 0. I gave it size of 100gb to contain log files as at that time were doing migration of exchange which generates much logs during mailbox move. Now the size of vmdk is 100gb as it grew during migration. Now since we are done almost 6 months I observed that weekly only 4/5 gb of logs are generated which are flushed at full weekly job of exchange.

So in windows always 95gb space is free in logs drive but vmdk still at 100gb since it grew at the time of migration process. Now I want to attach a drive of 30gb and want to move logs path to it and then release disk 3 so in the end to save 70gb on SAN.

Makes sense to you?
