6.0.3 installation of toolkit - state uncertain

On my iMac running 10.9.2 I left Fusion download and install the 6.0.3 update when it was detected after launching Fusion 6.0.2.  It started OK but during the toolkit installation the VM window went black and didn't ever leave that state so I used the menu to tell it to reinstall the toolkit.  The resulting VM seems to run alright but how can I determine if the toolkit got installed properly?  I note that the Virtual Machine menu has an item to "Cancel VMware Tools installation" which leads me to think that the toolkit did not get installed correctly.  Any thoughts on what I should do next?

Forgot to include that my virtual machine is Windows 8.1 w/update 1.

Today I resumed my Win 8.1 virtual machine and was prompted to run setup.exe from the VMware Tools.  I did that and chose to 'Repair' the Tools and it seemed to complete ok.  However when I double click the VMware Tools icon in the hidden task bar icon there are no functions present, such as to shrink the VM's disk.

Why no functions present?
