Host only network config => Can ping host from guest but cannot ping guest from host

Hello,

I wish to make a test of PLC programming too with the target on the VM. So I wish to have a separate network between the host and the VM.

I use:

VM workstation 9.0.3

Host Win 7 64 bits

Guest Win 7 32 bits

Network configuration:

Host IP 172.20.0.1 (VMnet1 adapter)

Guest IP 172.20.0.201

In the VM settings the adapter is set to host only.

In the virtual network editor  the setting of IP adresses of the adapter VMnet1 is done accordingly to the above mentioned addresses.

When I run an ipconfig command on the host or on the guest the IP addresses are OK. I can ping the address 172.20.0.1 from guest but cannot ping 172.20.0.201 from the host. I also tried with removing the windows firewall on both side and got the same result. The antivirus of the guest is also turned off.

Does anybody have an idea ?

Many thanks for the attention.

Regards.

Marc

What AntiVirus product is on the Guest?  I've seen some AV products block some communications even when so called disabled/turned off until a rule was set.

If you look at the Network Properties of the NIC (Local Area Connection Properties) in the Guest OS is there a Protocol bound to the adapter from the AV software?

Thanks for the answer.

.

The AV software is Webroot. I checked the NIC protocols configuration and it looks like this:

So I don't think there is a link with AV software. Do you agree ?

No, not necessarily, as the lack of a AV specific Protocol in the Local Area Connection Properties is not conclusive proof that Webroot isn't still blocking communications.  Since I do not use any Webroot products I can only repeat what I've already said, "I've seen some AV products block some communications even when so called disabled/turned off until a rule was set." and add to that I've seen cases where conclusive proof required temporarily uninstalling the target product.  I'd take a Snapshot, uninstall Webroot and check communications between the Host and Guest.  If it works then you'll need to consult Webroot on what's blocking communications and how to set a rule to allow ICMP Echo Requests (ping).  You can set this rule after reverting to the previous snapshot state, no need to reinstall.

Thank you for all these informations. I'll try a "clean" VM without the AV and then I'll report.  Thanks again.
