Cannot login to Admin page

Hi Guys,

After a power outage the virtual environment went down.

Upon reboot the vCOPs service went back in foundation mode although it is licensed with an Advanced Suite key.

I wanted to re-register vCOPs with the vCenter server but cannot login anymore to the /Admin page.

On clicking Login button it stays there with a "Verifying login information." for literally 5 minutes then fails with a 'General error occurred'

I've checked disk space on /data on both VM's and it is less than 10% used so it should not be a disk space issue and therefore I did not add a new disk to extent /data (see KB 2016022).

I've already done the usual sanity checks but no luck...

I need your help guys Smiley Happy

Thx,

Didier

Hello,

I got into the same issue but used KB 2013358 to fix it.

I ran the script resetadminpwd.sh which exited with error: 'The password was not successfully reset' due to the psql command not found... but it did work on the UI VM.

Note that I used the same password than previously set, which does not respect the new password requirements of the SLES SP2 by the way - only my root password was required to be enforced.

Are you able to log in to the console at "root"?

What version vC Ops are you running?

Yes I can log in to the console with the root account and sudo with admin account as well.

Originally it was v5.6 and upgraded (.pak file) a couple of months ago to v5.8 (Build 1448123).

I'm guessing you didn't change the admin password recently - have you? Part of 5.8 was increased password complexity/age requirements.

So, to reset the Admin password you need to run an admin pw reset script. However, this script refers to psql. In 5.8 there is a known bug in a profile file, which can cause "psql" to not work upon relative reference. This is fixed in 5.8.1.. which I suggest you upgrade to when possible.

Do us a favor...   run "su postgres".. then run "psql alivevm". If psql alivevm works, you're good to proceed with this next KB. If it fails citing psql not found or the like, do not proceed to the KB.

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=201335...

Once admin password is reset as per the KB, try logging in again.

Hi Mark,

In our situation password hasn't been changed and complexity is high with at least 8 characters long mixing letters, numbers and symbols.

I ran the su postgres followed by a psql alivevm and it returned the following error "bash: psql: command not found"

I tried to run the command in /opt/vmware/vpostgres/9.0/bin and this error message came up: "psql.bin: FATAL:  database "alivevm" does not exist"

I've downloaded the latest .pak but obviously I will not be able to upgrade through the admin web console.

Thus I've unpacked the PAK file, copied the unpacked folder to the UI VM tmp folder, then chmod 755 updatecoordinator.sh and finally ran it.

The script updated locally and also the Analytic VM remotely. 15 minutes later I'm now running v5.8.1.

Obviously I snaphooted the whole vCOPs environment before the upgrade...

I tried to log back in to the UI admin web page. It still failed but with a new error message: "The user ID and password combination is invalid. Please try again."

It turns out that there is a specific VMware KB 2065785 to deal with this error. I followed the instructions and guess what... that did not solve my problem.

Thus I tried to reset the password following your advice and VMware KB 2013358.

But it failed as well with the following error message: "passwd: Have exhausted maximum number of retries for service"

Now I'm clueless Smiley Sad

I'd mentioned to not proceed to the KB given the problem.. you kinda skipped right past us fixing the problem with the psql path. I would have suggested to fix the psql problem and get you logged in with admin to do the update gracefully.

After you've upgraded have you tried running psql? Does it work? Did you reboot both VMs and then try running psql?

My issue is fixed. Thanks to everyone in this post.

FYI I manually updated to v5.8.1 to fix the reset password script problem (see previous thread for more info).

Once done I reseted successfully both root and admin passwords.

Now I can access to the admin web console page where I could re-register against my vCenter server.

At the same time the license got updated as well to the correct version (Advanced).

We are back into business!

Login to the UI console as "admin" and it will prompt you to change the password.

Once you have changed the password you can get into the https:\\vcops.yourdom.com\admin using admin and new password

The same holds true for the analytics VM, login to the Analytics console and change the password.  I reacently went through the same exercise.  It makes sence keeping the passwords in sync.
