Workstation 10 crashing

Hello All,

Wondering if somebody might be able to provide some advice. I've been using VMware for some time and have a pretty decent number of VMs, today I noticed that version 10 was available so I decided to give it a trial and updated from Workstation 9. Once I installed it however it would load the first Home page, plus the list of VMs I have and I tried to do pretty much anything and VMware crashes. Every single time. I tried going to About and it crashes, create new VM, crashes. Even loading up a VM crashes.

I've tried uninstalling other VMware products, uninstalling Workstation 10, repairing Workstation, and cleaning everything using CCleaner. I have also tried rebooting after the first installation.

After the reinstallation it crashes before the home page even loads.

Does anyone have any suggestions at all? Maybe some log files I might be able to investigate?

I'm running Windows 7 with 16GB RAM and an AMD FX-8150 CPU.

I'm also running into similar problem.  VMWare Workstation 10 crashes on me about once an hour and the only way I've found to recover is to reboot the host machine.  It won't let me take ownership of the files if I just restart VMWare workstation.  I noticed it seems to most often happen when I'm trying to switch between virtual machines.  I'm getting really tired of it crashing all the time and starting to seriously consider switching to using some other virtualization product.

Did you try the test program to determine if your crash is the same as the one that this thread is discussing?  If it is the same problem, the issue should be fixed already in Workstation 10.0.1.

If it is not the same issue, then it'd be better to start a different thread instead of piling onto this on, and it'd be useful to provide details for us to help diagnose your crash (that is, please describe the nature of the crash and provide log files).

Thanks for the reply.  Sounds like I have a different issue so I'll start a new thread.  I just tried runing the test program but it didn't report any conflicts and I've been using Workstation 10.0.1 for a while now.

Hi. I am experiencing a similar problem.

My host is Linux based 64x; recently upgraded to Workstation 10 and now cannot run any Windows vm's (Linux based vm's run ok); Opening and running a Windows vm causes a complete system crash and auto reboot.

If you could post instructions on how to troubleshoot and work-around for Linux 64x hosts I would really appreciate it.

Hi, as I stated just above to another person who was running into a completely unrelated crash, please do not dogpile on this thread.  Reporting unrelated crashes in an existing thread (that really was about one specific issue to Workstation 10.0.0 on Windows) that's already been answered is neither useful for us (it makes it harder for us to learn about new issues and to determine how prevalent they are) nor for you (you are less likely to get responses about your specific problem).

Thanks a thousand times for giving me the culprit causing complete hang of the host as soon as I tried to start any kind of VM... I went to the point of trying HyperV (and gave up when I saw it disabled the host power management..). It's now a thing of the past (along with Kies on my computer) :smileylaugh:

edit: spoke too fast, the issue is back after a reboot, I have no clue what temporarily fixed the bug... clock_watchdog_timeout BSOD!

edit2: Bitdefender for Windows8 security is incompatible with Workstation! No problems after removing it.
