You will need a Server Hardware which is supported to run ESXi - Cross check if the server is supported to run ESXi at VMware Compatibility Guide: System Search

You need Storage (Local or SAN)

An IP to assign to the ESXi Host

You need a Management server(or a workstation or desktop), to access ESXi using the vSphere client once the installation is completed.

You will need a vCenter server if you want to manage the ESXi host with existing hosts centrally.

Hi,

Here is what I would consider once the hardware has been procured:

Check VMware HCL again to see the recommended version of System BIOS and Async Drivers for that make and model of Server with the corresponding ESXi version.

Keep the network sheet ready with the details about the IP, DNS, VMkernel interfaces. If your org has a central DNS server it would be good to log a ticket in advance to get the DNS records upgrade with the ESXi host name.

Keep the information ready about the root user account access and other administrative access required for this server.

You also need to work with the Storage & Network teams to create Zones and VLANs for the Server respectively.

You would need admin priv to add the ESXi host to an existing vCenter server.

I think this covers most of the basic install & setup of the ESXi host.

You will have to size the Virtual environment according to the configuration of present physical servers. See if they can be consolidated onto lesser ESXi servers. Packing ratio and many other things come into picture hwen you are doing the P2V.

Also keep in mind sometimes, though not often, a physical server may not P2V for countless reasons. Have a contingency plan for those boxes.

Make sure the software on your servers is compatible to run in a VM. Every now and then I come across software vendors that say their software is not supported in a VM. Will it work? Most likely...but if you ever need support you are screwed.

Do NOT P2V windows domain controllers.
