I have 2 Dell PowerEdge 2950 servers. One is 1st generation model, and the other is a 3rd generation. The 1st generation model has a Xeon 5160 CPU and PERC5i SAS RAID controller, and the 3rd generation model has a Xeon E5420 and PERC 6i.
I installed ESXi 5.5 on both, set things up, created my virtual machines, all was just super. However, the 3rd gen model with the PERC 6i, when rebooted, shows the message "The ESXi host does not have persistent storage" in the vSphere Client. I then have to go into Storage -> Add Storage, and after thinking about it for 10 seconds or so, there are all my 3 volumes shown, as set up on the PERC 6i, ie local storage. I then add each datastore, keeping the signature. I can then start my virtual machines and all runs perfectly happily until I reboot the server, and have to go through the whole process again.
Does anyone have any ideas? Re-adding the storage is getting tedious, and I'd like the machine to come back up on its own accord after a power outage. I suspect it's the PERC 6i, because the other server doesn't have the problem. But at the same time, everything is perfect on the server in question until the reboot.
