I have upgraded my hosts from ESXi 5.0 to ESXi 5.1 so I could have Win 8 and Win Server 2012 as guest OSes. However these are not listed in the guest OS list when I attempt to create a new VM.
I can only see the same list as when the server was ESXi 5.0. The latest OSes I can see are Win 7 and Win Server 2008 R2.
I am using VCenter Server 5.1. I can't figure out what I need to do to enable support for Win 8/2012. I will log a ticket if no-one can help here.
Cheers,
Martin
check this kb:
VMware KB: Windows 8 / Windows Server 2012 Operating System does not boot or install on ESXi or ESX
Thanks but that KB refers to ESXi 5.0.
5.1 is meant to support Win8/2012 out of the box.
Logically it should work....Not very sure but on 5.0 have you applied patch mentioned in kb....??
Which build of 5.1 are you running?
ESXi 5.1.0, Build 1065491
Funnily enough, I have upgraded another server to the same build, and this one *does* show the choices for Win 8 / 2012! So I have two servers that don't show the choices, and one that does.
More info - the one that works is using a different vCenter server than the two that don't work. However the version and build of vCenter is the same in both cases (5.1.0 build 1064983).
Cheers,
Martin
Do you create the new VM via vCenter? Try connecting directly to the host to check this, if at all possible

Good idea...when I connect directly to the host I do get the options to select Win 8/2012! However if I do it via vCenter I don't see the options. So...it's something to do with vCenter. But what?!
Guess I need to log a ticket.
