Error message:
The import failed because /home/user/Whonix-Gateway.ova did not pass OVF specification conformance or virtual hardware compliance checks.
Click Retry to relax OVF specification and virtual hardware compliance checks and try the import again, or click Cancel to cancel the import. If you retry the import, you might not be able to use the virtual machine in VMware Player.
It however can be imported into Virtual Box without any error messages. Who is responsible for the bug? VMware or Virtual Box?

Same issue here. Is there a solution or a workaround after one year?
Thanks!
The OVA specs say: convert the existing vmdk format to the type createType="streamOptimized"
Drop random parameters of the current configuration file, simplify the remaining parameters and finally obscure the parameters by changing and simplifying the parameter-names.
When you are done store the rest as an xml file.
Put that all into a tar-archive and whenever you meet users make a face as if you had done something userfriendly.
Once you know that - untar the archive and read the xml. Try to figure out the meaning of the xml entries and create a new vmx-file from scratch.
If there is a mf-file - rename it.
By the way - current version displays the screen : do not use this in a VMware VM - see attachment
