USB device connection constantly prompting if selecting Connect to Mac

I am trialling VMware Fusion 6.0.2 and have noticed an issue when I connect a USB based device while a VM guest is running.

If I select "Connect to Mac" then the dialog disappears momentarily and then instantly reappears. If I tick the box to remember the selection then the dialog no longer reappears but I notice an Invalid Device in the USB properties of the VM guest.

The issue happens with multiple devices (USB - RS232, Headset / Microphone etc).

Is anyone else noticing this issue or do I have a configuration issue? I noticed another thread with a similar problem here yubikey not working when a VM is running.

Just to add more info.  If I connect my USB device (usb to serial port adapter) while Fusion is not running or when no guests are running the device works fine.  Like the original poster, if I connect it while the guest is running and try to select "connect to mac" it just continually prompts me again.  I cannot access the VM settings during this time because of the continual prompt for connection choice. If I select connect to windows it will connect to windows fine and I can use the device from the guest.   While connected to windows I can access the VM settings and de-select the device and then it will go into the prompt loop again until  remove the usb device or connect to windows.

This is a 6.0.2 known issue.  A few things that I've heard as workarounds:

  • Downgrade VMWare Fusion to 6.01
  • Plug in a USB hub, then connect through that (not sure why this works but it did for me)
  • Suspend the VM guest, plug in the USB device, then resume the VM
