Is 1:N ( 1 Protected site : 2 or more Recovery Site ) supported in SRM 5 using array-based replication?

Hello Everyone,

I would like to ask if I can setup a 1 Primary Site to 2 Recovery Site using SRM array based replication? Is this a supported configuration?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

1:N configuration is supported. However to be more specific what you have to do is the following:

1. Install 1 vCenter Server on protected site.
2. Install 2 SRM servers on protected site both registered to the protected vCenter server. Start SRM installation in custom mode(VMware-srm-x.x.x-xxxxxx.exe /V" /lve C:\install_log.txt CUSTOM_SETUP=1") in order to install SRM with custom extension names.

3. Install 2 recovery vCenter servers on recovery site.

4. Install 2 recovery SRM servers each registered to its won recovery vCenter server. Make sure you use same extension names as you used on protection site.

5. Pair the SRM servers on protection and recovery sites - extension names should match in order for pairing operation to succeed.

That's it. Let me know if you need more information on the above.

Thank you Nik for your prompt response. I would just like to clarify if 1:N is supported regardless of what 3rd-party array replication I may use. Or just with vSphere replication not with array-based?

Do you have some docs to support it? As I've only found N:1 configuration on VMware KB: Understanding Site Recovery Manager protection and recovery limits in a shared recovery-s...

Really appreciate your response.

Thanks!!!

1:N or N:1 is supported regardless of what 3rd party array replication you may use. The thing with vSphere replication is that there is no N:1(or N:1) with it because you can deploy only 1 vSphere Replication appliance per vCenter Server as opposed to multiple SRM servers(each with different\unique extension name) per vCenter server.

When I say N:1 and 1:N are both supported I mean that when you have N:1 which is mentioned in the docs and you do a failover of the load on that environment and then do a reprotect now you have a 1:N environment : ). So both scenarios are supported.

Let me know if you need more info on the subject.

Nik

Thanks Nik for making this thread informative...

So, my setup would look like below;

Protected Site

1-VC

1-SRM Extension Name = N1 (Paired wtih Recovery Site 1)

2-SRM Extension Name = N2 (Paired with Recovery Site 2)

Recovery Site 1

1-VC

1-SRM Extension Name = N1 (Paired with 1-SRM at Protected Site)

Recovery Site 2

1-VC

1-SRM Extension Name = N2 (Paired with 2-SRM at Protected Site)

BTW, can I still install SRM on VC?

And just need to create a separate recovery plan to recovery site 1 and recovery site 2

Thanks!!!

Hello again,

The setup you described above looks fine to me and supported. What do you have in mind when you say "can I still install SRM on VC?" . You can install several SRM servers against a single vCenter server as long as SRM extension names do not match.

Nik
