Two Port groups with same VLAN on same Vswitch?

    taylorb Expert

I'm trying to do some consolidation.  We had two different people set up two different Vsphere farms and different Network Labels were used.   Of course the network labels have to match perfectly to vmotion without losing connectivity.    So I was hoping I could just create duplicate port groups on my vswitch for the mismatched VLANs.  I know I could just migrate them and quickly switch the network label, but some of these are mission critical and cannot go down.

For example,  On one cluster, I might have a port group for Vlan ID 88 that says "Web DMZ".  But the other cluster has "WWW" for VLan ID 88.    Can I just create a second port group on the first cluster that also used Vlan ID 88 with the name "WWW" and I'm set?    Is that going to cause switching issues (loops, etc)?

Hope this makes sense.  I guess the short version is can I have two different port groups on one vswitch using the same VLAN ID tag without causing problems?

Creating multiple port groups with the same VLAN ID shouldn't cause any issue. It's only about tagging/untagging the traffic from/to the VM, so there's nothing like loops, ... to be afraid of.

Yes you can create a new Portgroup called "WWW" and move all the machines there. then delete the unwanted portgroup. Do not change the name of the portgroup when the VM's are connected to it. I have done that many times and the VM's NIC association does not get updated with the new name.

But anyway i don't want to confuse you. The answer is yes it can be done.

Thanks for the responses.  I created duplicate port groups with the expected labels and VLANs and everything vmotioned together with ease.
