View 5.1 Dell FX160 xpSP2 embedded

Has anybody been able to get View 5.1 client install on Dell FX160?

We finally upgraded to 5.1 over the weekend, and our FX160 are working fine so far.

So it's definitely possible to get the FX160 to work with View 5.1, but I am not sure how hard it is when starting from scratch; and, of course, it's not officially supported by either VMware or Dell.

Could you give me more details on how you got the FX160 thin clients to work with 5.1.

I need to give my manager an answer soon.

Thanks

Unfortunately, I'm not sure what did it - I didn't encounter any 5.1-specific errors.

The problem I mentioned at the beginning appears to be unrelated.

(FTR, it seems to be the result of launching View Client before the network connection is ready; happens only if the device has been offline for an extended period, but EWF "restores" the problem, so it persists until an EWF /commit. Doesn't really sound like your problem.)

The FX160`s that are working are these XPSP2 embedded thin clients? If so is there someone there that I

could talk to?

I keep getting the message The View Connection Server Connection failed. Network error. Contact your network administrator.

This message appears after you type in the connection server address.

Thanks

Yes, they are XP Embedded SP2.

I think the factory image we started with was the German A03 version, but I didn't document it at the time - I only remember that whatever version was current at the time had issues when joined to our domain, so we stuck with an older one.

They are all available from Dell's download archive.

Other than me?

I suppose I could ask my boss if he can spare some time to help you, but he's rather busy currently.

I see.

Reading back through the thread, you posted that you couldn't access the connection server's web interface through https.

Did you get an error message?

Did you get certmgr to work on the FX160?

No I did not get the certmgr to work.

I just now have a little time to look at this problem again.

Ok I tried a different FX160 got the 3 files copied and registered and was able to get the certmgr to work. However I am

not sure what cert to download and were to install it.

I would just use a browser to look what certificate the server presents, and install the appropriate root certificate.

If the server uses a self-signed certificate, you can just install that; but AFAIK, it still needs to go in the "Trusted Root Certificates" store.

Other things that might produce useful information:
Can you connect if you disable the certificate check?

(set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\VMware, Inc.\VMware VDM\Client\Security\CertCheckMode to 0)

Can you connect using an older version of View Client?

(After we did our upgrade, I  found somebody still running View Client 4.0.4)

I tried view 4.6 with SSL turned on and could not connect same error message. Even tried it on my

desktop.

Tried the registry key no luck.

Even tried it on my desktop.

Wait - does that mean you can not connect to your connection server using ANY View Client for Windows?

No it means I can`t connect unless I use the View 5.1 client. I am able to connect to the 5.1 connection server without a problem

using my desktop and view 5.1

OK, now I'm confused - Client 4.6.0 ist still working for me.

I'm not aware of any client version policy on the server, and if I read the documentation correctly, 4.6 and 5.1 use the same firewall ports, so that can't be the reason, either.

My last two ideas:

1) Regarding the issue that the Connection Server's web interface can't be opened from the FX160 - one reason I know that would cause that is if https support is not enabled in the browser.

Internet Options -> Advanced -> "Use SSL 3.0" and "Use TLS 1.0" should be the relevant settings.

2) Wireshark. Maybe the Client is really trying to use a port that's not open - get something with two network interfaces, bridge them, put it between the Client and the server, and look where exactly the traffic goes.

I checked the IE settings and it is set correctly. I tried a new desktop with the same problem client 4.6 will not connect

to view 5.1 connection server. What is your connection server settings?

According to the compatabilty list view 4.6 client is not compatible with View 5.1 Connection server.

I found only one configuration of Dell FX-160 Windows XP Embedded thin client working as VDI client of View Connection Server ver.5.1.2: FX-160 must be installed from original DELL DVD image XPE_ENG_A04.wim (date 6.1.2010). Newer version does not work good. The WMware client installed on the FX-160 must be version 5.3.0-1042023. Older version does not work properly, newer version I did not tested. The FX-160 works well with described configuration of Windows XPemb. + WMclient including double different sized monitor, ActiveClient secure software and Dell Smart Card Reader keyboard.
