No sound Windows 98 SE VMWare 5.0.3 (1040386)

    jshakerley Novice

Just managed to get this OS installed and whilst I've managed to update the display drivers (courtesy of VMWare Tools) I have been having persistent troubles with the sound - I've googled the problem and downloaded creative drivers that some suggested, but nothing has worked.  Sound is playing on the native OS (X 10.8.4).

      Please help!

Here is the URL for what I use in a Windows 98 SE Virtual Machine:

          http://ccftp.creative.com/manualdn/Drivers/Others/1843/SBPCI_WebDrvsV5_12_01.exe

Note: During the install it needed to have files off of the Windows 98 SE CD-ROM so have it handy.

Hey thank you for your tip, which worked fine.

The only other problem I am having is trying to get Win 98 to recognise my external disc drive (I am running this on a rMBP - this is the drive in question amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008Y6SH02) - in order to play my old games (which is the reason for my installing Win 98) I'll either need to use this drive directly or rip the discs to .iso which could cause further software rendering problems down the line... any ideas?  Drivers for USB powered devices?

Actually, I've just been trying to run the CDs off ripped .iso files and I'm falling foul of anti-piracy measures: I need to get this external disc drive connected otherwise it's not going to work.

If there's nothing anyone can suggest, do you think Windows ME would work?

I have no problem accessing a CD/DVD in the USB SuperDrive attached to the MacBook Pro from Windows 98 SE without having to attach it directly to the Virtual Machine as a USB device.  Also, by default, the Windows 98 Virtual Machine does not have a USB Controller and needs to be added in the Virtual Machine's Settings.

After adding the USB Controller you'll need to click Advanced USB options and set the USB Compatibility: to USB 1.1 as Windows 98 does not have drivers for USB 2.0 and later.

Attempting to connect an Apple SuperDrive will present the following message:

The "Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive" device requires installation of the Apple Boot Camp driver disc in the virtual machine.

Without this driver disc, the device might not work properly or it might cause the guest operating system to fail. Do you wish to continue?

If you continue an additional message shown.

The device "Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive" was unable to connect to its ideal host controller.

An attempt will be made to connect this device to the best available host controller. This might result in undefined behavior for this device.

Then without the Driver it will be flagged under Other devices in Device Manager.

Also the Boot Camp Drivers requires a newer version of Windows Installer then what Windows 98 has and I have not bothered to check to see if it can be updated as I really have no need to use Windows 98.

All in all I would use ISO Images wherever possible although not all CD's/DVD's will copy properly to an ISO Image without the use of software capable of bypassing measures intended to thwart the illicit reproduction of copyright intellectual property and you're own you own there.

Note that my other reply was written before you edited your last post which only said "The only other problem I am having is trying to get Win 98 to recognise my external disc drive (I am running this on a rMBP) - in order to play my old games (which is the reason for my installing Win 98) I'll either need to use this drive directly or rip the discs to .iso which could cause further software rendering problems down the line... any ideas?  Drivers for USB powered devices?" and I had opened a Reply windows and went to breakfast and did not refresh the thread before writing my reply.

As to the actual external drive you have, I doubt you'll be able to get it running properly, meaning as a Blu-Ray USB 3.0 device, as an attached USB Device under Windows 98 and since it's USB 3.0, Windows 8 is the only consumer release (of Windows) that natively supports USB 3.0.
