Can not Complete the configuration of HA agent on the host. Other HA configuration error

Dear Team,

I am facing a issue while configuring the HA on one server. Scenario is as follows:-

Six month back I have install the VMWare solution for our organisation. It is ESXi 4.1. At that time there was two server in the cluster and both were configured with HA sucessfully.

Now I have added one more server in the Cluster but when I am trying to configure the HA on the same system, It is giving the error " Can not Complete the configuration of HA agent on the host. Other HA configuration error." (Screen Shot is attached)  So many times I right click the server and select Reconfigure VMware HA but didn't succeded.

Could anyone please help me. It is a live system and very critical node. So need help on urgent basis.

Additionaly, we have also purchased 1 Year Technical Support (TS) for our prodcut. Could anyone please guide me how  can I raise a ticket for this.

Thanks & Regards,

Gaurav Asthana

Hi All,

Thanks for your kind support. My problem is solved and it is very simple. By turn off and turn on again the HA setting on Cluster, the problem solved. All servers are now HA configured.  Smiley Happy

Thanks again....

You can open a case either via phone or web. Login to your My VMware account for details.

Regarding the HA issue, which vCenter Server license do you use (Essentials, Foundation or Standard)? I see you added all hosts using the IP addresses rather than their FQDN names, can you confirm DNS is configured properly for the host (DNS settings and name resolution)?

Thanks for your reply. My comment is as follows:-

1) It is enterprise license. (Attached for your reference.)

2) Yes, I have added the server by IP Address not by host name and which DNS you are talking about. Could you please explain a bit more. All servers can able to ping by there IP Address.

(Moderator Note: a.p removed screen shot with license keys!)

Thanks & Regards,

Please do not post license keys!

Regarding DNS, try to ping your hosts by their fully qualified domain names (e.g. esx1.yourdomain.local) and/or run "Test Management Network" form the DCUI (ESXi console). Usually you'd create a new Host-A entry on your DNS server and add the ESXi host with its IP address to ensure proper name resolution, which is a requirement for HA in vSphere 4.

Hi Andre,

Please find the result of Test Management Network in the attached screen shots. In the screen shots VaaS-1 is the server having IP 192.168.19.182. And VaaS-3 is the server having IP 192.168.19.177 (Which is causing problem.)

Hope this is what you are asking for.

Yes, we have two DNS server (Primary & Secondary). But we not configured in ESXi , Do you want me to configure this in ESXi. If yes, then my point is why it was not require earliar while doing the HA configuraiton for other two servers.

Thanks

Well, I can't tell you how the hosts were configured. Maybe the name resolution is configured in the /etc/hosts file!? Anyway the proper way to configure a vSphere environment is to create Host-A entries for all ESXi hosts, and configure the DNS servers and the fully qualified domain name in ESXi.

Hi Andre,

Same error comes even after configuring the DNS. I have taken the screen shot with related Event. May be this can be helpful to analyse the issue.

Sorry, I missed your previous reply. I cannot tell you for sure what's causing the issue, but you may want to try uninstalling the agents manually to see whether this solves the issue (see "Reinstalling the ESX host management agents and HA agents on ESXi" at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1003714)

But this process is stating that I need to disconnect the system from cluster and I cann't do that as the system is live and critical VMs is running in this node. Any other way to do this without any impact on service.

Thanks

One thing I also want to add here that after 97% complete I am getting this error. Please give me a solution where I don't need to remove this server from cluster and which also not affect the service.

HA failing to configure at 97% is often related to DNS resolution issues. Please double check whether this is ok and resolve any issues (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1003735)

Disconnecting and reconnecting a host from a vCenter Server environment - even with powered on VMs - isn't usually a problem, unless you use advance features like vDS or run workloads which require the host being managed by vCenter Server. Anyway, since you have Enterprise licenses, you should be able to vMotion the VMs to other hosts if required.

May I also suggest updating / upgrading to 5.0 / 5.1? That has a whole new vSphere HA stack, no more dependencies on DNS etc.
