Target VM shuts down after successful P2V

    JohnnyBravo Hot Shot

I am having a problem with a Windows 2000 sp4 machine which has been P2V. The process seemed to go fine and boots up, the problem is it only stays on for about 15 seconds before it does a self shutdown. It allows me to go in via safe mode but nothing shown in the logs.

We have Citrix PS4 installed on here also.

Source machine was Compaq  ML350 G3 used Converter 4 for the migration

      Any thoughts?

      Thanks

check vmware.log for the VM and see if you find any errors. Are the vmware tools installed...

Hi it wont stay up long enough to get the tools on there and safe mode wont allow the installer service to load.

Will check the log for the VM more thouroughly now and see what it comes back with.  One thing I have been concentrating on is the Prolaint shutdown service and thought this might be linked? have disabled etc but still shutsdown..removed all hardware devices through safe mode and still the same thing. Server is PS4 with loads of apps and tools etc on here so could be anything

              Hi Johnny,

You mentioned no errors in the logs, do you mean System, Application logs in Windows?

Does it come with error: "Previous shutdown was unexpected" in System Event Log?

It might worth a try to disable "Automatically restart" option on "System Failures" in "My computer" properties and enable dump and then see if you can get any info out of the dump.

              Also,

Please verify that in VM: Edit Settings- Options; Guest OS is listed as "MS Windows Server 2000"

yes in the os system logs, there are some errors relating nic etc but nithing to do with a shutdown and no there is no error about previuous shutdown. Its like something is initiating the shutdown from the VM which is why I thought the Proliant shutdown service maybe to blame if the managment controller isnt there? been fine on other P2Vs though???

Already diabled the automatic restart (1st thing) to see if I could catch a blue screen.... the OS goes to the point where it says "safe to shutdown" and yes the OS is listed as Windows Server 2000... tried another P2V also just to see but comes up the same!

                  Hi Johnny,

I would recommend to try and uninstall Proliant related software and agents.

This is what I was always doing when P2V Dell and HP servers. I monitor VMs through VC and other software, so no need for us to have those on VMs.

                  Keep us posted.

I guess your uninstall from VM would be tricky as you can't uninstall in the "Safe" mode...,

See if you can disable all HP related services on the physical and then P2V...? That might work,

If your new VM is fine, then you can uninstall them.

Thanks for your help with this and yes tried everyting from removing all HP related software which would come out, disabling all unrequired services etc the usual stuff

I do this anyway but never had to to resolve an issue more of a clean up operation, booted in safe mode did the set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 devmgmt.msc etc and removed absolutly everything ghosted....booted up fine after that. Strange one this though

                      At least its there now

I have having the same issue, after booting in safe mode the event viewer reported that the UPS service issued the shut down, I disabled the service and booted OK
