how do you manually set IP?

HI, I am looking at the beta version here and since we don't use DHCP for servers I was wondering how I manually set the IP information for this appliance ?

Thanks

Per http://communities.vmware.com/servlet/JiveServlet/previewBody/23723-102-4-31670/log-insight-10-beta-...:

  • You cannot change the network properties of the Log Insight virtual appliance at run time
Log Insight does not support changing the IP address, DNS, Gateway, or Hostname of the virtual appliance at run time.
Workaround: You must change them in vCenter vApp properties and perform a full VM shut down and then a power on.
    1. Open a vSphere Client and locate the Log Insight virtual appliance.
    2. Shut down the guest operating system of Log Insight and power off the virtual appliance.
    3. Right-click the virtual appliance, select Edit Settings, and apply the changes to network properties.
    4. Power on the virtual appliance.
Note: You must re-enable launch in context each time you change the network properties of the Log Insight virtual appliance.

I will ensure this information gets into the Installation and Administration Guide.

Well I am running this stand-alone so its not in a vApp so I need to set network settings manually.  I managed to get the IP set on the appliance but I am not sure how to get the gateway and DNS settings on there.  It is a Linux appliance so I can't see what you can't manually set the IP and I don't know why VMware didn't build a configuration interface into the appliance.

So if the only answer is you can't manually set the IP then I guess my question was answered.

Correct, the virtual appliance is not a vApp. However, if you go to edit settings of the VM then you will notice vApp options, which allows you to configure the network settings manually assuming the virtual machine is powered off. Please note that setting the IP address directly on the virtual appliance is not supported and may result in your settings being overridden.

Thanks for the feedback on adding the configuration interface into the appliance - we will consider this for a future release.

In short, the only supported way to set static network configuration is through the vApp options via the edit settings section of the virtual appliance.
