Ping but no browser access

I installed Player5.0.2 on Windows 7 and, and then installed Windows Server 2012 with the gui. All that went just fine. The server can access the host hard drives; the network icon says internet access. Network sharing says internet access on the Server. On the Host, also, the Network and Sharing information says Internet access. On the VM Server 2012 I can ping sites but when the browser (both IE and Firefox) attempt to resolve a URL I get connection times out. I can ping both by url and IP.

Any help is appreciated. I'm a bit of a novice at this, as is probably obvious.

I'm not sure I know how to answer that. The VM's bridge is working. The host (my Win7) uses a router. What specifically do you need to know?

Well, I am a bit more confused. Edit->Virtual Network Settings....I assume that in VM, not the Network Sharing

The VM says Internet Access. I've read the documents, but still a bit unclear

ON the Win7 side, this is what it sees:

But details shows that DHCP is not enabled. Is that the problem? But if so, where do I enable it?

BUT, when I tried to download the latest, even though there's no 32 or 64 bit choice, when I did download it, I got an incompatibility message. SO, I'm trying the previous version.

This is becoming a mess. I can't install this version since VM is already installed. If I deinstall it, I'll have to go through the whole original install again. Can I do this in Powershell in the VM / Server 2012?

You don't need to install it... just let the setup program unpack all the files into the temporary folder it creates... copy the network.cab file from there, then click the Cancel button on the setup.

VMware Player 5.x no longer ships with the Virtual Network Editor vmnetcfg.exe however it does ship with and installs the vmnetui.dll and can be brought up by running the following command in an Administrator Command Prompt from the VMware Player Working Directory (or include the FQP of vmnetui.dll in the command line).

rundll32.exe vmnetui.dll VMNetUI_ShowStandalone

Thanks. That command worked perfectly. BUT I got this dialog box:

Now besides Automatic I can also choose the RealTek Family Controller. BUT, even when I click on the Bridged connection, nothing happens. The grayed out check boxes are grayed out.

When the kb say:

1. Click Edit > Virtual Network Editor.
2. Select a network adapter that has the Type set to Bridged.
3. In the Bridged to drop down box select a usable network adapter.
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 for all available physical network adapters that are displayed in the Bridged to drop-down.

I say:

1- press in "add network"

2- select your new network

3- change from "nat" or "host-only" to bridge

4- select your unplugged adapter

The command line you've presented will not work as the VMware Player's Working Directory is not in the %PATH%,  The command needs to be run in an Administrator Command Prompt from the VMware Player Working Directory (or include the FQP of vmnetui.dll in the command line).  Additionally you do not need to include the FQP of the rundll32.exe as it is in the %PATH%.

RonNewYork is using VMware Player 5.0.2 and that version does not have the Edit menu nor the Virtual Network Editor command.

The way to bring up the Virtual Network Editor in VMware Player 5.x is to do as I've outlined in my reply, Re: Ping but no browser access!

Sorry, I allways use %path% as best practice.

I can't grant to run some scripts without that, and of course, UAC is disabled for administration purpouses.

I figure that out. Just used the complete path:

rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation\vmnetui.dll" VMNetUI_ShowStandalone

It's probably not surprising but when I restarted the VM the Network connection was still Bridge - Automatic. (Not sure if that's the problem)
