Protection Groups. Multiple VMs or Single VMs?

We're going to be running a business continuity test soon and my predecessor has configured SRM so that VMs are grouped into their logical groups. Which makes sense. But what if I only want to recover one VM from a group of 5? I see I can change the power state of individual VMs but unless it's hidden away I'm not seeing anywhere I can choose which ones to recover individually.

In this case would it be better if I created individual protection groups per VM?

Hi,

Are you using array-based replication? Do all the VMs reside on the same LUN?

What version of SRM do you have?

Michael.

Hi there,

VR replication, multiple mapped LUNs, version 5.1

Since VM cannot be included in multiple Protection Groups, in your case you have to create separate Protection Group for that VM.

Hello Michael,

Thanks for the help but I'm not looking to have one VM across multiple groups.

My question was if I have 4 individual VMs (Server-01, Server-02 etc etc) in one protection group and I run a recover, is it possible to recover just the one server from the group.

I have since decided that I'm going to recreate the protection groups and place one VM in each.

Nope, all the VMs in the Recovery Plan will be recovered.

My previous comment was intended to explain that a workaround of having one Protection Group for all 5 VMs in it and another Protection Group for only one of the VMs is not possible.

Michael.
