w2k8 r2 poor performance on vm

We're had great luck using w2k8 on our VMs except for one server.  This one app which also makes use of a database runs horrible in a virtual environment on w2k8, but just great on an old physical 2950 physical server running w2k8 or even a virtual windows 2003 server is fine.  Does anyone have any ideas what could be the issue or where I could start looking?

Hi,

i) You using vmxnet3 drivers? if not i would

ii) Would use LACP if your switches have the capability http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=100404... (more a nice to have though as you mentioned the other vm's ok

iii) Take a look http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=100951... too

Many tx

Can you please add some more details to your description?

  • Did the software vendor give specific instructions for virtualizing the application?
  • Is the database remote or local?
  • Does the issue still happen when the VM is running alone on the host?
  • Do you see any kind of bottle neck within the guest OS?
  • What hardware specs does the host have?
  • What hardware specs does the physical server have?
  • What exactly is horribly slow, how can you measure this?
  • Did you pull a performance log bundle from the host or had a look at esxtop yet? (http://www.yellow-bricks.com/esxtop/)

You need to look at the performance data for the guest OS itself (Performance Monitor, Resource Monitor, or Task Manager for a quick snapshot of processes).

You need to look at the VM's performance stats in vCenter.

You need to look at the host's performance in vCenter and/or using esxtop from the command line.

What did you allocate to the database VM in terms of vCPU and memory?  What kind of storage is it hosted on?
