Part way into a vCenter 5.1 clean instal into SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard on a W2K8 R2 VM. All gone ok with SSO but vCenter itself fails with the ODBC connection. It was working so don't know if I've doome something. Am I right to be using the vpxuser account for the ODBC? I've had to bomb out part way through so will have to continue Monday - we have a powerdown this weekend.
vpxuser is set as db_owner as per the VM docs, I've been through it a dozen times resetting the permissions and so on. or should I be iusing the sqldb user? That doesn't work either, btw. it's been years since I did any of this with SQL Server - I'm normally a MySQL man. I need this up and running on Monday so may have a go on my home lab over the weekend. I can't use domain accounts for internal reasons.
What error are you receiving? Did you verified the %TEMP%\vminst.log file?
It's the old 28000 Windows vs SQL authentication. If I use Windows authentication as a domain admin it logs in no problem. if I use mixed and use the vpxuser it fails. Rechecked all the permissions and roles, all look good. Reset the password, still fails.
SQL State 28000
Login failed for 'vpxuser'
SQL Server error 18456
Cannot open default database
My feeling with this sort of thing is I'm either missing something really simple or it's quite a bit more than that.
At present vpxuser is a sql user - would it be better if it was a local Windows user? As I mentioned, I have been asked not to use a domain user.
Weird. Can you test the DSN? Is it ok?
There are some KBs on this.

It's probably something simple. What users should the vCenter services be running under if not local system / network? I have a local vpxuser account that is a local admin, could I use that?
I had the same issue, i just reset the settings and everything owrked fine.
Just got it all working! I hope...
the web client works as well, but only with vpxuser, vSphere only as the domain admin. I'll have to look at adding in 2 more users but it all looks good for now.
Thanks guys for your time and help.
