vmware workstation 9 bridged networking not working

hello everyone,

I have been using vmware player for awhile now and just recently i started having problems with my guest os (ubuntu linux) not working with bridged networking. Here is some information...

Main host os (windows 7)

Guest os (ubuntu linux 64bit)

So for some reason the only networking mode that will work is NAT. I was using bridged mode for awhile and just about 2 weeks ago it stopped working and I have no idea why.

So i tried upgrading from vmware player to workstation 9 because I know that workstation 9 comes with virtual adapter editor and I have tried using that but I can not get bridged mode to work.

Okay so here is what has been happening...

When i select bridged networking it gives me the ip address 192.168.1.2 and my windows box is 192.168.1.10

when I am in linux under bridged mode i can ping my 192.168.1.2 address i can ping 192.168.1.10 (windows box) and i can ping my linux box/guest os (192.168.1.2) from windows.

I can also ping my gateway 192.168.1.1 from my guest os (ubuntu)

I can ping google.com and everything seems to be working, but i can not get any internet access. When i try ssh'ing into a remote computer (outside my network) it does not work and when i try to do "apt-get update" it does not work.

Now I have tried many things with vmware workstation 9

I have tried setting under device network adapter -> bridged (automatic)

then i go to virtual network editor -> bridged (automatic) i have a list of 5 virtual adapters I have tried selecting all and I have tried selecting my main internal wireless network card a (realtek rtl8188ce) but nothing is working!

I was going to purchase vmware workstation but since I can not get bridged mode to work I am not sure anymore...

Can anyone here please help me out?

I am lost on ideas and I don't know what to do...

One thing I am thinking is maybe it is a DHCP issue. Since my windows (main host os) is 192.168.1.10 shouldn't my bridged ip address for my guest operating system (ubuntu) be 192.168.1.11?

Does anyone here have any ideas, i am desperate!

I thank you all for your help and assistance...

Oh, I have also tried using the custom option -> vmnet0 (automatic) and assigning vmnet0 to my internal wireless card which is realtek rtl8188ce but that did not work either...I saw by doing some research that doing that has worked for other people but I am never ever that lucky

I am not sure what is going on...

Oh when I tried looking at some of my dhcpclient.releases file i saw that the assigned ip address was 192.168.85.128 which is the ip address i get when I am using NAT with vmware workstation...

Maybe that has something to do with why only NAT works?

I am going to try to do a fresh install of ubuntu and see if using Bridged first thing works at all...

If anyone has any ideas or thoughts I would really appreciate some input...

I thank you all for your time and your assistance.

okay guys well i found my problem and it was something ridiculous...

Okay well about 2 weeks ago AVG internet security installed on both my desktop and laptop and I completely forgot that AVG internet security comes with is own firewall....

I had turned off the firewall on my windows 7 (host os) but forgot all about the firewall on my AV. Now the one thing that I am trying to figure out is that how i can allow Vmware bridged through my AVG firewall. When i was looking at the firewall exceptions it has a section for Vmare Workstation, VMware Player, and it even has a section for VMware NAT but nothing for VMware bridged which is why i was not getting any internet access under bridged. I have been doing some research and I see that this is a big problem among the AVG and VMWare communities but I still haven't found a solution on how to allow VMware bridged through the AVG firewall.,,

If anyone has figured out a way around this i would love to know about it...

Oh on the AVG firewall rule for Vmware NAT it has the location of the file "vmnat" in C:\Windows\SYSWow64\vmnat

but there was nothing in that directory for vmware bridged?...

Anyone have any ideas?...

Well i figured out how to fix my issue with AVG Internet Security (AVG's Firewall) and VMware Bridged networking...

AVG's firewall go to:

settings -> expert mode -> advanced settings

when in advanced settings there is an option to allow all virtual machines and traffic if you select that option bridged mode will work.

I hope that this has helped someone else out and saves them time troubleshooting.

Hello Gentlemen,

I just would like to add my 2 cents to this discussion. I ran into the same issue and my host is Windows 7. I tried all the above and no luck, nothing worked for me excepting deleting VMware completely from my system!

  • After deleting VMware; reboot your PC
  • go to Network adapters and you should see your adapter "Local Area Connection "x"" nothing else

To make sure your system is clean

  • right click on the adapter and select properties
  • make sure you DON'T SEE VMware Bridge Protocol
  • click on Install-->Service-->Add and make sure that VMware drivers aren't there either

MAKE SURE THERE IS NOTHING LEFT BY VMWARE IN YOUR MACHINE. THIS IS WHAT SEEMED TO BE MY ISSUE. THE INSTALLER WAS USING LEFT OVER DRIVERS.

Reinstall VMWare and you should be good to go.

Hello,

I fixed the issue by opening the "virtual Network Editor" under the my Win7 Host.

under VMnet Information > Bridged by default is set to Automatic, change it your Ethernet device and click apply and ok.

This will restart VMware networking.

That worked for me.

Best, Yigal

Actually the problem is that in the vm network settings the vmware adapter vmnet0 is set to automatic. Change it to the correct network card.

See Vmware menu -> Edit -> Virtual network Editor

IMPORTANT: I have VMWare Workstation 11 and have the same error, that is, the bridged networking stopped working, and in the Virtual Editor you could not even find this configuration in the VM Network 0. ! ! !

The above solution (e.g. uninstall VMWare Workstation, make sure there is no remaining items, and install again) was the only solution I could find.

Thanks.
