135. Re: Nvidia Quadro <3 vSphere 5.1?
smhvmware Apr 18, 2013 6:21 AM (in response to waynej)The R720 can fit two cards yes, but I was under the impression that View only supported one per host at this time.

136. Re: Nvidia Quadro <3 vSphere 5.1?
TomMar Apr 18, 2013 7:13 AM (in response to smhvmware)I took two videos one with the Grid and the other in software.
Both are running on the same host, the specs for that host are:
Dell R720
Bios 1.6.0
384Gb RAM at 1333Mhz (I think)
Dual Xeon E5-2660 (2.2GHz)
nVidia Grid K1
No Teradici 2800
Both VMs have 2 vCPUs and 4Gb of RAM. Both have 512Mb of video ram. Both VMs are stored on the single 500gb 7200rpm local drive on the ESX host. I haven't setup a ILIO datastore on that host yet and that probably won't happen until next week.
The software video is still being encoded by Vimeo so its going to be 30 minutes or so before you can view it.

138. Re: Nvidia Quadro <3 vSphere 5.1?
Linjo Apr 18, 2013 11:31 AM (in response to waynej)Up to 8 GPU:s are supported with vSGA, but I think you will run into problems with power/cooling way before that.
Since the GRID:s are passivly cooled it needs to be cooled by the chassis somehow and that seems to be tricky for the servers.

139. Re: Nvidia Quadro <3 vSphere 5.1?
waynej Apr 19, 2013 9:08 AM (in response to Linjo)That you for that clarification.
So now I need to figure out scalability. For example, you have 8 users doing 3D work simultaneously (Google Earth). Lets assume the hardware is a single server with a single GRID card. Would you be better off with a single K1 or a single K2?
The K1 has four slow GPUs and 768 CUDA cores while the K2 has two fast GPUs and 3072 CUDA cores.
Should I assume that as long as I have enough video memory to handle all of my client VMs, the K2 solution would deliver a better user experience?

Bhargava_Shrivathsa Apr 22, 2013 1:03 AM (in response to TomMar)Hi Tom,
Need last input from your end.
Have you tried APEX card will it help in improving performance?
Do u have GRID K2 do we get better performance in K2 when compared to Quadro and K1 GPUs.
Thanks in advance

moron99 Apr 23, 2013 3:52 PM (in response to Saibot)Saibot, I modded my gt 640 to a k1 today but have been unable to get xorg to start on my host. just wondering if you had any success or any tips. The driver successfully loads but x fails to start. also nvidia-smi fails w/ an io error to /dev/nvidia0 though it does exist.
i've attached the nvidia bug report log if it is of use.

143. Re: Nvidia Quadro <3 vSphere 5.1?
Linjo Apr 24, 2013 2:46 PM (in response to iliketurbos)K4000 is not supported and currently do not work with vSGA.
NVidia have to support it in the driver for it work and they have not yet.

ballofwisdom Apr 27, 2013 2:10 PM (in response to Linjo)Hi everyone,
First off, thanks a ton for your contribution to this thread. It has been very useful, and has tought me a couple things along the way.
At this point, I am not getting an output from the gpuvm command. I've documented my environment and issues in the attachment.
I think the motherboard isn't compatible with the Quadro 6000 card, so I'm hoping somebody can confirm for me. Am I out of luck at this point, or is there something else I can try? How do I definitivly confirm that I have a compatibility issue?
Many Thanks!

Linjo Apr 27, 2013 2:03 PM (in response to ballofwisdom)I am working with a few that have similar problems but have not been able to figure out the issue yet.
Could you attach our xorg.log pleas? Its located in /var/log/Xorg.log
Are you able to install Windows 7 on the host to make sure that the card is working properly in your host?
Thanks

Linjo Apr 27, 2013 2:19 PM (in response to ballofwisdom)Yes, it seems that its the same issue as gigogig have mentioned before.
He has opened a support-issue on this.

vRickE May 6, 2013 1:56 PM (in response to fredr3k)I have a Dell R720 with a K1 will try a K2 later, right now im doing a couple of tests
Performace an stability seems to be lacking reminds me of my times of PC Gamer.
I've applied the registry change to remove the devTap cap but i think PCoIP is the issue now...
PCoIP crashed and my session got disconnected when using 3D Mark06
Using the vsphere console it runs and finishes with a score of 5799
Windows Movie Maker 2012 does not run apparently its an issue with the DDI Version of 9Ex, fortunately 2011 does work...
