this copy of windows must be activated with microsoft before you can continue

Hi guys

After P2V Windows 2003 Storage Server 2003 x64

I get this message "this copy of windows must be activated with microsoft before you can continue"

and I am not able to log in to the server and I cannot activate since NIC won't work - since no vmware tools.

any idea why this happens?

Vmware converter 5

thanks a lot

This can happen due to the hardware change when you P2V. Isn't there an option to activate by phone? If not, take a look at the VM's settings to see whether the NIC shows up as "E1000" which should be recognized by Windows 2003 out of the box.

This happens because you P2V'd a Server that has an OEM license. What that means is the Windows License is tied to the hardware. So, when you migrated to new hardware, in this case, virtual, that OEM license is no longer valid.

just wanted to see if you got it working by turning on the nic(e1000) and activating

I p to v'd a 2003 server but did not turn on the nic yet and wanted to make sure this works prior to shutting down the physical server
