We're running VUM 5.1.013071 on W2008R2 VM and vCenter Appliance 5.1.0.5100. Time to time I see a lot of queued "Check new notification" tasks. I must restart VMware vSphere Update Manager Service and enable VUM Extension plug-in. I can see "VMware vCenter Update Manager has restarted. The task was scheduled to run when Update Manager was not available and will run on the next scheduled time." errorr messages then.
I was able to "manually" download patches and upgrades before I've restarted VUM service. I've generated Update Manager log bundle before and after restart if it could help.
Thanks for an advice
Do you have any virtual appiances running apart from the VCVA?
http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2008266
Yes I'm running 4 virtual applinces in all: VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.1, vSphere Data Protection, vSphere Replication Appliance nad Dell_VC_Pluggin.i686-1.5.1.
New exploring - I'm able to ping W2008 VM from VCSA and opposite way but tasks still stay queued in Recent Tasks panel in web client. It turns to errors immediately if I run "Windows" vSphere Client. Next check pass well.
Do both the VCVA and Win 2008 have internet access? Is a proxy being used?
Yes and yes.
I'm able to reach web from both VM's.
There is a trasparent caching proxy (Squid 3.1.19) between VM's LAN and Internet. I've set bypass for both VM's to access Internet direct now to see if it helps. Thanks for tip.
Nothing changed. The same problem again. I'll try to re-install VUM.
That's weird. Let me know if the reinstall helps.
Following support I found some incompatibility in reverse lookup. Computer name was used as CNAME in DNS. I renamed W2008 VM to fit DNS A record but I loose connection to database then. So I reinstall VUM. It looks working well now. I'll wait few days and see.
Reinstalation haven't helped. Queued "check notification" tasks appeared again this morning
During reinstallation was the update manager plugin reinstalled as well?
Could you check and see if virtual appliance baselines are created and if so delete the baseline and check?
I think so. VIM setup uninstalled VUM first and I instaled it again then. There were no Update Manager icon in Home tab of vSphere Client before I enabled VUM plug-in in Plug-in Manager window. The version is still the same 5.1.0.13071.
Default baselines were created after installation of VUM - 2 for hosts and 3 for VMs. I had to attach them in comliance view to hosts/VMs before I could scan them.
Should I delete hosts baselines? I can't delete nor edit any VMs default baseline 'cause function is not active.
Problem stil persist after reinstallation of VUM as well as after reseting VUM database. Two new explorings:
1. The last completed "check notification" task usually appears in the same time - on 21:07:01 CET. It's just before vSphere Data Protection appliance finished VM's backups. Could it be the reason VUM loose connection to vCenter (or vice versa)? VUM is installed on W2008 VM.
2. I can see "com.vmware.vcIntegrity Task: Add Tag" in W2008 VM events just after I connect vCenter with vSphere Client from this VM. I don't restart VUM on W2008 before so it looks like some W2008 <--> VCSA connectivity problem could be the reason. But ping works.
Problem haven't appeared again since I moved VCSA from VDP host to W2008/VUM host a week ago. But there are 2 to 5 failed VDP backups daily since then
