We're looking for help from a few forum users that are affected by the 10.8.2 update issue. This issue causes the virtual machine to crash when using certain Windows applications that make use of 3D. This issue we're working on is only found on certain models of 2012 Mac, notably the 15" Mac Book Pro. Older Macs are not affected.
We're looking in to workarounds for the underlying issue and will shortly have a experimental software build containing those workarounds. If you've previously participated in a VMware Fusion beta program and are prepared to provide feedback on this build, please drop me a Private Message with the following information:
Your Mac model identifer: i.e. MacBookProxx,x
Your Mac kernel: i.e. Build 12Cxxx
There will be a short delay before the build is ready, if you don't hear back immediately we're still working on it.
Thanks in advance,
Simon
Hi Neuros,
We're still working on these problems and recognize the impact is high for affected users.
The Windows application issue is distinct from the Linux 3D desktop one, we're trying to chase down multiple issues. With the help of volunteers testers from this community we've managed to make a lot of progress on the Windows side of things, particularly with Office 2013. I'm still looking for feedback, particularly if you have a Windows Java application that can trigger the issue. Please private message me if you'd like to participate.
Our efforts to fix this problem were complicated by the emergence of new GPUs (640Ms, 650Ms, 660Ms, 675MXs) exhibiting similar behaviour on certain software configurations. I'm not able provide a timeline but rest assured this is something we're working hard on and would like to see resolved as soon as possible.
Simon

OSX: 10.8.2 always up to date.
I would love to test new versions. I've reverted to 5.0.1 and am trying to be patient but it's hurting my workflow pretty bad.
Still a chance to get in this test? I have crash problems with both Windows applications and Ubuntu desktop.

Simon -
I have been experiencing the issue since last year. Turning off graphic acceleration solved the problem, but is not an optimal way to run. I recently acquired a new iMac 27" and restored the applications and files from my MBP. I turned graphic acceleration on yesterday and this morning Windows crashed with the same error (VMware has shut down Windows...). I have attached the log file.
DouglassC,
The new iMacs contain nVidia 600 series GPUs, in the same family as the 2012 15" rMBP and 2012 15" MBP. These are the parts we're seeing the problem with. Thanks for posting.
Thank you for the personal reply.
I have both the new iMac and the 15” MBP. Do you need any more log files from either machine?
I am also willing to beta test fixes for this issue:

Hi
please consider me for beta testing (mostly, on Linux/Ubuntu64 side of things).
rMBP mid 2012, MacBookPro10,1
Software OS X 10.8.2 (12C3012)
thanks
Not sure where you are on this, but it sounds like this might be directly related to the problems I have (and posted) with Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic crashing, as it uses 3D and my specs are:
Mid 2012, 13 inch MacBook Pro
Processor: 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7
OS: 10.8.2
Memory: 8GB 1600 MGz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB
Running: XP from a virtual machine (not BootCamp)
I might be able to help if you let me know what you want me to do.
I have this issue in Windows with multiple applications. Happy to assist with testing.
MacBookPro10,1

Thanks,
Andre
Folks in this thread should try 10.8.3.
As a best practice, I always recommend a full clone backup before upgrading, and using the Combo updater, rather than software update, but YMMV.
Have just upgraded to 10.8.3 and tested. Seems to be working correctly at this point in time but have only tested with VNC client. Will do further testing when time permits.
The necessary fix for nVidia-based Macs is present in 10.8.3 GM (12D78.) Please update as soon as possible, noting the wise advice from dlhotka above.
I just upgraded a MBP and iMac and both appear to be working with graphics acceleration enabled!!!
Simon,
FWIW, 5.0.2 also took my 2011 MacPro down.
Here are my details after installing OS X 10.8.3 (today):
Model Identifier: MacPro5,1
Kernel Version: Darwin 12.3.0
Here is my graphics config in case it's needed:
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 5770
Type: GPU
Bus: PCIe
Slot: Slot-1
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 1024 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x68b8
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-C0160C-155
EFI Driver Version: 01.00.436
I will try with 3D acceleration enabled once I have backed up my VMs.

VMware Fusion 5.0.3 was released today so you might want to upgrade that as well.
Yeah - neglected to mention that I also upgraded to 5.0.3 just after patching Mac OS.
Well if you're still having an issue then I'd suggest you start a new discussion and include the support bundle as this thread was really for the 2012 Mac's that had nVidia 600 series GPUs, not the ATI Radeon HD 5770 GPU that you have.
Will do once I have an opportunity to test the new release. I will do as requested if I run into any issues...
Also just for reference the OS X 10.8.3 update is suposed to have fixed the issue of the nVidia GPU, the real primary target of this thread and what was at the root of the issue with VMware Fusion 5.0.2 on the 2012 Mac's.
Understood. I will test with care. 🙂
