Workstation 8 Install Error 1920 - Service VMware Authorization Service did not start.

I keep getting the following error message when trying to install vmwre-workstation-full-8.0.0-471780.exe:

Error 1920. Service VMware Authorization Service (VMAuthdService) failed to start.

Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

Here is what I have tried so far:

- I'm running Windows 7 (X64) with SP1, 8 Intel Xeon E5620 cores, 12 GB of memory.

- Rebooted and tried multiple times (4)

- Ran installation as administrator each time.

- The MD5 sum of the download matches the website.

- No other programs are running.

- VMware workstation 7 was uninstalled first.

- I've searched forums and google but only came across similar problems for different product.  None of the workarounds work here.

I have the same problem, but not only the 1920 error, after press the cancel button appears <<vmware workstation.msi failed error>> and If I want to start the installation I need to change the name of the installer (VMware-workstation-full-8.0.4-744019) to another name to start.

The Solution I found was to use CCLeaner to clean registry, applications, temp files...etc. After that, I rebooted the computer. Tried to install again and.... It Worked!

La solución que encontré fue utilizar CCleaner para limpiar el registro, aplicaciones, archivos temporales, etc ... Después de eso, reinicié el ordenador. Traté de instalar de nuevo y .... ¡Funcionó!

I have  two general replies and than a   specific qustion.

1)  Does WS 7 have an installer log similiar to the one in Linux?.  If so please post it - it could be in a temp directory.  Try using a  search tool like locate32  to search something like vm*.log. If such does not why does it not VMware?

2)  What exactly IS error 1920?  I'll guess that  VMware has  a glossary of their  error  codes but if they are proprietary why not just emit "unknown error" or "unknown internal  error". and not emit a  specific code to the user who can't use the information

To your paticular problem. Have you tried using a dedicated uninstaller program to remove WS 7?.  I like revouninstaller (freeware or shareware) because in "advanced" mode it creates a system restore point before running the native installer/uninstaller program  and then its  own (VMware does NOT)..  You will   find well in    excess of 100 leftovers after WS 7 is "uninstalled." .There does  exist a KB article about   how to  completely remove WS iin Windows (I think 1308) but some have said  it doesn't work. Maybe you can't do this  to corporate policy - this  doesn't seem likely but I can't  say.

Had a similiar issue when upgrading "automatically" from 9.0.1 to 9.0.2. Resolved it by doing this:

1. Restart computer.
2. Remove all you can from "%TEMP%" and "C:\Windows\Temp".
3. Remove contents of "VMware VIX" and "Workstation" folders (don't worry your settings should be in differnet folder, but be sure you don't keep your VM machines in there).
4. Start installation manully.

After that installtion went fine.

Just installed 9.0.2 upldating 9.0.1 on Windows 8 and it worksed perfectly uninstalling 9.0.1 and then installing 9.0.2.  I didn't do anything                  EXCEPT not installing the upgrade from within the program its itself.

Even for me the upgrade to 9.0.2 fails.
The setup fail with this Message:

... vmwareworkstation_x64.msi failed.
VMware Authorization Service (VMAuthdService) failed to start. Verify thet you have sufficient privileges to start system services

I tried several times to reinstall the program deleting first all the traces of the VMWare to C: (system and temp folders), restarting the computer and running the setup with administrator privileges, but I always get the same error.

With VMware uninstalled I noticed that continues to be present in the list of services the VMware USB Arbitration Service, but the driver that is referenced (C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\VMware\USB\ vmware-usbarbitrator64.exe) does not exist. May thei mean something?

Even the attempt to reinstall the previous version 9.0.1 and 9.0.0 fails.

I attach the installation log files if they can help to understand the problem

That shouldn't be a problem (I had it and upgrade went fine after doing above steps).

But VMware seem to have problems with old settings and this might be the case for you (at least upgrade from 7.1 failed for me because of that). So if everything else fails you might want to remove all settings (keeping only your VMs) and try again. For more information see: http://serverfault.com/a/483142/62024

I solved it by uninstalling ZoneAlarm.
Even if disabled, apparently this firewall interfered with the installation of VMW.
Now I upgraded to version 9.0.2 and restored ZA and all works fine 🙂

Hope someone finds this helpful.

I was having similar or same issues as described by many. In my case wmx86 was not running and so the instalation would not finish with Error 1920.

How did I solve it? Very simple.... uninstalling Avast! Antivirus.

I would add a precision to sirkong solution : after avast desinstallation; reboot....

I solved this problem in another way.
Restart the computer -> went into the BIOS -> disabled virtualization -> successfully installed Vmvare 8 -> Restart the computer -> went into the BIOS -> Enable Virtualization
And that's all)
