Guest IP address is not showing up on a vSphere Summary page with VMware Tools installed

Hello everyone!

I have an ESXi 5.1 host on Dell R610. I have noticed that Linux guests without X Windows installed don't have IP address and DNS name on vSphere Summary tab. Tried installing VMware Tools from ISO(Guest->Install/Upgrade VMware tools), as well as OSP version.

Windows guests as well as Linux guests that have X Windows installed have no such issues.

Could anyone please give me a hint why it is not working.

I have tried all actions described at http://communities.vmware.com/thread/403001

Namely:

1. Rebooting guest

2. Re-installing vmware-tools, changing it to OSP from original tools supplied with ESXi.

3. Removin/re-adding VM from host inventory.

4. Restarting services.sh on host

5. KB 1013371 - setting isolation.tools.setinfo.disable configuration  option to FALSE

Thank you for any suggestions.

Thank you for your reply.

I have used an "Automatic" option. So ESXi generated MAC address automatically.

I installed 2 systems from the same ISO. One with X Windows, another without one. After VMware Tools installation the one with X windows showed IP just fine, whereas the one without X windows was not. Same VM configuration. Networking is also same. I am able to ping internal and external IPs with both. So I am just wondering, if there is some kind of a module not installed on Linux without GUI. And if that is true, then how can I add one.

MAC address on the machine is:

0050569c2be0

Header belongs to VMware.

I have installed Centos 5.8 without X Windows. This time I configured networking before installing VMware tools. IP address and hos info showed up.

I have a Centos 5.4 running. Did same sequence and it didn't work.

Checked loaded libraries used by vmtoolsd process. On 5.8 there a library called libguestInfo.so was loaded, whereas on 5.4 it is not running.

Used lsof -P -T -p "vmtoolsdPID". Could anyone tell me if that library should be loaded.

If yes, then any reason why it is not loaded or if there is a way to load that library somehow.

I am a newbie, so any ideas are welcome.

Thank you.
