Export ESX Server Configs and VI configs to a txt file?

    Leo Smith Enthusiast

Is there a way to get the configs out of my ESX3 servers and my Virtual Infrastructure. Something like System information in Windows Server?

You can use the command:  esxcfg-info  > config.txt

You can try using esxcfg-info, it produces alot of information and you can pipe it to a text file. You can also use some of the other esxcfg commands. I know someone posted about a tool that woudl do this a while ago, it was not free though, I'll see if I can find it.

            Networking

o     Esxcfg-firewall – Configures the service console firewall ports

o     Esxcfg-nics – Prints a list of physical network adapters along with information on the driver, PCI device, and link state of each NIC. You can also use this command to control a physical network adapter’s speed and duplexing

o     Esxcfg-route – Sets or retrieves the default VMkernel gateway route

o     Esxcfg-vmknic - Creates and updates VMkernel TCP/IP settings for VMotion, NAS, and iSCSI

o     Esxcfg-vswif – Creates and updates service console network settings. This command is used if you cannot manage the ESX Server host through the VI Client because of network configuration issues

o     Esxcfg-vswitch – Creates and updates virtual machine (vswitch) network settings

            Storage

o     Esxcfg-mpath - Configures multipath settings for your Fibre Channel or iSCSI disks

o     Esxcfg-nas – Manages NAS mounts. You use this command to add, delete, list, and change the attributes of NAS devices

o     Esxcfg-swiscsi – Configures your software iSCSI software adapter

o     Esxcfg-vmhbadevs – Prints a map of VMkernel storage devices to service console devices (no VI client equivalent)

            General

o     Esxcfg-advcfg - Configures advanced options for ESX Server.

o     Esxcfg-auth – Configures authentication (no VI client equivalent)

o     Esxcfg-info - Prints information about the state of the service console, VMkernel, various subsystems in the virtual network, and storage resource hardware

Another thing that's been suggested is to run vm-support.  I like it like this:

                    vm-support -n -N -w /root/lkg

This will provide a handy tar file with all your config info inside.  I use lkg for last known good.  Rerun after changing hardware, config, etc.  The file is automatically datestamped so you can untar and compare if something goes bananas.

make the /root/lkg dir before running the command

This gathers the proc nodes, messages, /etc, blah, blah blah.  Here's a dump of what's in mine (minus the proc nodes).  Looks pretty complete to me.

Thanks for all your help everyone. You guys are a great resource. For some reason I could only mark some of the posts as helpful even though all of them where.  I will buy beers at VMworld for you.

Another excellent tool for checking out what VLAN's are presenting is this baby:

                        esxcfg-info -n | grep -E -i "_name|Hint"

Kicked my network admin in the jimmy with this one...

You don't need to perfrom NIC Teaming from within the VM. What you should do is configure a vSwitch within ESX for your VM connectivity and assign 2 pNICs to this switch. This is where the redundancy comes in. THen you create a portgroup, give it a network label and VLAN tag if necessary and assign that network to a single vNIC in your VM settings. There are various options for load balancing methods but if you jsut want a simple method of providing redundancy this should do it.
