Vmware tools for Fedora 18/64 guest

Hi All, I am running Fedora 18/64 guest on the latest Mac OS host.

Everything is fine except the vmware tools - installer cannot find the kernel headers.

I installed everything: the new kernel (3.7.2), headers, sources, gcc, kernel tools, etc.

Rebooted the system several times.

Nothing does help.

Any idea?

Even though one can install Fedora in a Virtual Machine using VMware Fusion nonetheless it is not an officially supported Guest OS under VMware Fusion.  This means that even if you can get VMware Tools to install there may still be issues and you might also need to apply some 3rd party patches as well.  YMMV.

Thank you for the link. Unfortunately it still does not work, although i reinstalled the system from scratch and followed the instructions. Btw, i have Lxde spin version of F18, this might be a problem.

The article clearly states "How-to Install VMWare Tools on Linux Fedora 18 Gnome3 ..." so that could be an issue...  I can't say since I haven't installed 18 yet... just ran from ISO Image so far.

I have been all over this the last couple of days.  Doesn't matter what I do, the install script reports an invalid path to the kernel headers.  Kernel packages are all the same revision, i have pointed the script to appropriate places and even some shots in the dark and still cannot get it to run.  Everytime it comes up blank for the path when searching.  Does anyone know the logic behind this and how I might be able to force/trick it into working?  It appears that there is logic in a compiled perl module that makes the determination.  I understand F18 is not a supported OS, but none the less would like to get it working.  I'd like to test SAMBA 4 built and tested in this release.  Thanks!

Haven't tried it yet myself however I bookmarked it to come back and try when I have time, if I have any trouble.

Genuis!  That worked like a charm.  I thought there might be a change in structure some where.  Just for clarity for everyone else, WoodyZ's link (original credit to entel) solved my issue.  The magic after having downloaded all the proper packages (make, gcc, binutils, kernel-headers and kernel-devel):

#cp /usr/src/kernels/3.7.2-201.fc18.x86_64/include/generated/uapi/linux/version.h /lib/modules/3.7.2-201.fc18.x86_64/build/include/linux/

Rerun vm-config-tools.pl

Now resizing and file sharing work as expected. Thank everybody for discussion and suggestions.

Can you let me know how you got Fedora 18 on MAC via VMWare Fusion? I tried the live media and it just stopped at the launch screen, the Blue Wallpaper.

Did you create a partition and install ?

I just used it and everything works perfectly (except 3D acceleration)...

Hi Anup, I did nothing special. I installed LXDE spin version of F18. LXDE window manager is very lightweight and it does not use 3D acceleration, which might be a problem, see the link posted by Sven.

Thanks for that link - I was able to get it working. I was trying with the Live Media and had started the download of the 4.3 GB DVD ISO to see if I could use that... but this works perfectly.

BTW, there is also a net installer, which has the advantage - besides being able to choose the software - of getting the latest version of all packages at install time; compared to the full DVD, it is only about 300 MB in size:

Fedora-18-x86_64-netinst.iso

Anyway, the resulting system is the same from the Fusion compatibility point of view (sadly, 3D acceleration isn't yet supported for Fedora 18)...

so I did 'ln -s /usr/include/version.h /usr/src/kernels/[myversion]/include/linux'  then gave it '/usr/src/kernels/[myversion]/include' as the path.

But my question is, does VMWare have a ticket open to fix this in the tools?
