Continuum,

You seemed to know alot about VMware Player.

I am brand new to VMware Player and in need of some experience assistance.

To satisfy the requirements for my for my self-study course 3078 "Fundamentals of Novell eDirectory 8.8" it is necessary to downloaded and install a version of VMware Player. I chose to use VMware Player 4.0.0 build-471780.

This download and install (including the extraction of vnetcfg.exe) was completed successfully onto my MS Vista Ultimate Desktop following all of the procedures to setup a "HOST Only" network, as I do not need any access to my Internet connection for this basic Novell training.

After this installation, I am required to copy two Linux Virtual Servers and a Linux Virtual Workstation to "C:\Users\Steven\Documents\My Virtual Machines". This all works fine, except, when I try to verify the communication between the virtual servers and the virtual workstation all I can "ping" successfully is the Virtual Network Adapter of the virtual workstation at:

My current network adapter settings on my Vista ultimate workstation are:

Local Area Connection: 192.168.1.0

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

DHCP: 192.168.1.1

VMnet1 Connection: 172.17.12.150

Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

Default Gateway: Blank

DNS Servers: 172.17.12.101

Connection-specific DNS Suffix: da.com

Please help so I can get this course completed for my work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so your VMs can only ping 172.17.12.150 ?
that sounds exactly like it is suposed to work

whats wrong ?

Continuum,

Even though I have been in the IT world for some years, keep in mind I am a very new student to Linux and VMware Player.

The Novell eDirectory course I am taking requires that I test the communication between my Virtual Linux Servers and my Virtual Linux Workstation.

Part of this requirement of testing communications is to PING the IP Address of these machines amongst each other.

When I PING either of the Linux Servers at 172.17.12.101 or 172.17.12.102 I get a "Network Destination unreachable" response.

1.  What is the Linux command to verify the IP address assigned to my Linux Servers and single workstation Virtual Adapters?

2.  How do I make sure that this is setup properly so they can communicate?

Thank you,

SuperSteve123

ifconfig

Read Chapter 5 (Configuring Network Connections) in Getting Started with VMware Workstation as this covers VMware Player too.

Woody Z,
I read Getting Started with VMware Player (VMware Player 4), Chapter 7, "Configuring Netork Connections":
1. I setup my private network as "Host-only" and made sure that both of my Linux Servers and my single Linux Workstation's Virtual Adapters said "Host-only".
2. I then followed the instructions of Chapter and released then renewed my host system (Windows Vista Ultimate) IP Address (ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew).
3. I ran "ipconfig /all" command and got this information:
Ethernet adapter Local Are Connection:
NVIDIA nForce 10/100 Mbps Ethernet
DHCP Enabled
Link-local: fe80:::74cf:c978:447b:8c92%8<Preferred>
IPv4 Address: 192.168.1.5<Preferrred>
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gway: 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server: 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers: 192.168.1.1
NetBIOS over Tcpip: Enabled
Ethernet adapter VMware Network Adapter VMnet1:
Connection-specific DNS Suffis: da.com
Description: VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet
Physical Address: 00-50-56-C0-00-01
DHCP Enabled: No
Autoconfiguration Enable: Yes
IPv4 Address: 172.17.12.150<Preferred>
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gway: Blank
DNS Servers: 172.17.12.101
NetBIOS over Tcpip: Enabled
Do you notice anything that looks out of place for my setup?
The only thing that sticks out to me is that the vmnet1 is not DHCP Enabled - should it be? If so, how do I change that without rerunning the vmnetcfg.exe again?
Thank you again for all this advice, Woody Z

Continuum,

Please see my comments to "Woody Z" and add anything you think might be helpful.  I am getting a bit frustrated with how easy this is "supposed" to be but is not proving to be easy at all - for me.

Archive (compress) and attach the vmnetdhcp.conf file to a reply post.  It should be located at: %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\VMware

So what happens when you copy and paste %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\VMware into the Address bar of Windows Explorer and press Enter?

Woody Z,

I found the file and have used WinZip to compress it but now I am having trouble getting it to post  to the community for you to see.

It adds as a vmnetdhcp.zip just fine but when I click "Post" it doesn't seem to start loading.

I let it sit for an hour tonight trying to post but no luck.

Any ideas on how to get it to you so you can view it for me?

Thanks,

Woody Z,

I got found my vmnetdhcp.conf file you spoke of and post it to this community as a reply.

Have you had the chance to look at it yet.

I am still in need of learning how to make my two SuSE Linux servers and SuSE Linus workstation communicate.

Thanks for all your help,

The VMnet1 Network Adapters settings shown in the output of ipconfig /all does not match what is in vmnetdhcp.conf file and needs to be fixed.

Should I start over with the installation to correct this problem with VMnet1 or do I just correct the vmnetdhcp.confg file manually and resave it?

Not sure how to proceed.

The VMware Player installation isn't the issue or problem.  What the problem is you're modifying the expected defaults for VMnet1 and this is generally frowned upon as it typically breaks things.  It is always best to use VMnet2~7 and or 9 for customized VMnets however this then requires manually editing the .vmx configuration files as well as described in this thread in replies other then to your replies.  Additionally since the Host VMnet* (other then 0) by default the last octet is always .1 this further complicates things when one makes changes.  Not necessarily saying you cannot make a customized VMnet to accomplish your goal however this requires a mixture of setting changes in the Virtual Network Editor and manually editing the vmnetdhcp.conf as needed to have all the pieces configured properly, especially if one also manually edits the VMnet* (other than 0) properties in Windows too, under Networking.

The bottom line is this has become a pile of spaghetti in this thread and it's getting hard to follow so I'd suggest starting a new thread (which you really should have done int he first place) and in the OP of the new thread detail the network configuration you're trying to achieve and then include snapshots of the Virtual Network Editor as reconfigured for your configuration needs and then the output of ipconfig /all on the Host redirected to a text file not just copied an pasted and also a copy of the vmnetdhcp.conf, again not copied and pasted.  Archive the files into a single .zip file and attach it to a reply so as to keep the thread clean and shorter thus easier to read as the thread progresses.  It is actually considered extremely rude to post the entire content of a file or output of a command in the body of a reply when it's more then a few lines and should instead always be archive and attached and in a single archive file when possible.

I would like to extend a heartfelt apology to you, Woody Z and all the other members of this great community forum.

I truly did not understand the etiquette of this forum and other forums and now, with your comments from your post yesterday have a complete understanding of how I will present a thread in the future in this and other forums.

Thank you again for all of your help in this VMware Player 4 matter.

The question is have you resolved the configuration differences to have a working customized VMnet for you particular needs?  If not then let us know so we can get it work for you as it should be able to be done.  I've done may different customized configurations and while the VMnet defaults normally work for most users, nonetheless customization is possible however unfortunately not everything can be easily configured through standard GUI and needs manual overrides and sometimes in more then one place.

BTW  Although I was not trying to invoke one nonetheless thanks for the apology and unfortunately netiquette involving the posting of the content of files often escapes far to many posts.  Believe me, those of us that are willing to help and know what we're doing have no problem with having everything archived into a single file as it enables us to more easily examine everything and keep it more easily organized on our system with greater efficiency and minimal effort as we work through the issues that will typically require more then a sentence or two response.
